I first heard “Song for you” on this ex-record company executive’s myspace page, and the song blew me away. Quiet, minimalist, but a very powerful love song. Wonderfully written. Just loved it, so I bought the Album “Time without Consequence”. Born in London, of Scottish descent, he is a great singer songwriter. His debut album became # 1 selling album in “cd baby” history. I love his song “Through the dark”, featured on the movie “Gone baby Gone”.

Jono Mccleery

December 4th, 2008

I have listened to his demos -vocal accompanied by acoustic guitar and thought they were wonderful.I guess that`s what Vashti Bunyan and Tom Robinson thought cause they helped funding his debut EP. I really think he should stick to the demo form -I wouldn’t touch it. Bare and simple. I would love see him live opening for Fink this fall

Darkest light demo

The orchestra for the lonely

The sounds of loneliness, of an empty bar late at night with this middle aged woman all by herself, cheap lookin…One of Kcrw`s today`s top tunes -moody atmosphere french film music -Les deux love orchestra, real sweet and sexy

Empty or Full?

December 4th, 2008

This raspy voice that reminds me of Tim Buckley, meets Van Morrison, meets Joe Cocker just kills me. Choosing Ethan Jones, famous for his production work with “Kings of Leon”,’ Joe Cocker”, “Crowded House” to name a few is excellent cause he is not trying to impress with production skills and big sound and is leaving the sound as it should be;Simple – acoustic guitars doubled in stereo, string section, shaker and beautifully recorded Ray Lamontagne vocal. Listen to “Let it be me”.

Greenwood head

December 4th, 2008

Most of you heard about him as a guitar player of Radiohead. I heard about him as a writer for the BBC -where he is a composer in residence. In Radiohead, besides taking a major songwriting credit and a lead gtr roll – Jonny Greenwood also contributes texture rolls – sampling work and atmospheric electronic sounds. He is also the only Radiohead member that is classically trained. This is the lovely “Hope of the new

What do you Fink?

December 3rd, 2008

Although coming from an electronic background after spinning records for years he`s made an amazing acoustic real minimalistic sounding album with the help of studio wizard and production master, formerly of Lamb, Andy Barlow – A ****in bomb. Accompanied by classical guitar and playing the most simple but rhythmic parts, either arpeggios or thin open voicings, and warm and unique sounding vocal, nice harmonies on the choruses, with touches of occasional bass guitar ,upright, cymbals or syncopated kick snare pattern, and again like on Feist`s “the water”, every note is a must. This is the sound of intimacy (..”the things that keep us apart , keep me alive”….) while all the wet guitar squeaks are audible.Fink and Barlow succeed in achieving tension where needed mainly with guitar and voice. There isn’t a dull track on this album even if you can`t find a radio “too” friendly song here. “If only” is one of my favorites on “Distance and time”, this album is a mmmmmust.

Feist

December 3rd, 2008

I love Broken Social Scene. That`s how I got to Feist. I have heard a song on her recent album called “The water“. It made me think about Eno`s theories about music and space in music, saying that the space and notes that are not being played, are sometimes more important then the ones you hear. There is not even one unnecessary note on this song. Upright bass, sustain pedal held piano, bell sounding keys, and beautiful beautiful wet vocal.

Silent elephant parade

December 3rd, 2008

Saw this small add in the local paper that said something about this American girl and her Israeli husband performing at this place by my house.Elephant Parade was their name. I went into their myspace page and liked what I heard, so I went. I got to this 2nd floor apartment converted into a club and was blown away by this couple. I remember when the guy/singer asked the soundman to turn the mics level all the way up ‘cause they were singing very low, kinda whispering. They were very shy and insecure but their music was wonderful – real real lo-fi, minimalist – usually just an acoustic guitar and cheesy toy keyboard or a song accompanied by a ukulele. Wonderful wonderful real small simple songs and I went right away and bought the album. That`s my favorite Elephant parade`s song …
