Meredith Monk remix

January 3rd, 2009

This is my remix of Meredith Monk`s song “Urban March” of the album “Mercy”. This remix bares small resemblance to the original. I have called it “MONKey business”.
Meredith Monk is a composer, singer, choreographer and creator of new opera, musical theater works, films and installations. A pioneer in what is now called “extended vocal technique” and “interdisciplinary performance,” Monk creates works that thrive at the intersection of music and movement, image and object, light and sound, in an effort to discover and weave together new modes of perception. Her ground-breaking exploration of the voice as an instrument, as an eloquent language in and of itself, expands the boundaries of musical composition, creating landscapes of sound that unearth feelings, energies, and memories for which we have no words. During a career that spans more than 35 years she has been acclaimed by audiences and critics as a major creative force in the performing arts. In 1968 Ms. Monk founded The House, a company dedicated to an interdisciplinary approach to performance. In 1978 she formed Meredith Monk and Vocal Ensemble to expand her musical textures and forms. She has made more than a dozen recordings, most of which are on the ECM New Series label. Her music has been performed by numerous soloists and groups including The Chorus of the San Francisco Symphony, Musica Sacra, The Pacific Mozart Ensemble, Double Edge, and Bang On A Can All-Stars, among others.

A Jew in Muslim Istanbul

January 1st, 2009

Not all Jew / Muslim interactions must end up in a tragedy. Yinon Muallem is a good example for that. As An Israeli, he is living, working and most important creating among Muslims in Istanbul, Turkey for the past 10 years. Yinon Muallem was born in Israel to parents of Iraqi origin and began his musical career playing latin percussion. Over the years, ollowing his family roots, he was drawn to Middle Eastern music. He started mastering instruments like darbuka, def, bender and Iranian zarb as well as South Indian kanjira and gathem. Years ago, he decided to go to Turkey to learn oud with Turkish virtuoso Yurdal Tockan. The 2 musicians developed instant chemistry that led to Yinon`s collaboration with Turkish musicians, and since then he has been living, performing, recording and teaching in Istanbul. I had met him few months ago and he gave me his recent recordings. This mixture of Klezmer Jewish Middle eastern Muslim music sounds wonderful to me. It`s a shame the two cultures and religions could not be brought together like Yinon did with his talent.
