Happy Birthday

October 24th, 2009

The first album I was involved with it`s making was MC Lyte`s first record. It all happened by pure coincidence. The reason I was involved was because I knew the technology, while Hip hopers and DJ`s knew only how to spin and rhyme. I knew samplers triggered by drum machines, knew Akai samplers inside out and all the tricks about Emu and MPC drum machines. That`s how I had found out about soul music, funk, R&b, Hip hop, it`s origins and what was it influenced by.

Few albums later I was digging the crates of DJ Premier while we were looking for musical ideas for the first Gangstarr records and looking for funky records at stores like “House of oldies” on Carmine st, or record stores at the Fulton mall downtown Brooklyn, or around Times square, especially where I could buy all that wonderful series Break & Beats”. This series was a collection of songs from the 50`s-80`s, songs that had a drum break at the middle, so DJ`s could use them for spinning and we used to sample a bar of those beats and chop these to little tiny samples of snares and hihats, or kick & snare and trigger those in a different order to create fresh new beats. While searching for funky songs and beats, I started noticing this label of Stax, and it was everywhere. Every 2nd funky record had that label on, every other record had the Booker T`s and the MG`s snare sound on it, every funky chicken or strut was theirs.
Now, thirty years later I just saw Stax is celebrating 50 years anniversary. I am thrilled and honored to write about this wonderful label and if u never heard of it, hey, it is really about time. Go to the Stax full story

The Omni series

October 23rd, 2009

And if we have mentioned our friend Daniel Lanois earlier, you should know the restless producer/ musician/ artist has released a 3 boxed set CD called The Omni series, which is an collection of his music. Just listen to this beautiful pedal steel guitar instrumental from Steel, part one of this collection.

Billy Ward

October 23rd, 2009

My friend A.A had sent me a Youtube clip of Billy Ward plays on a song that sounds like something Peter Gabriel or Daniel Lanois would love to have done. Billy Ward has been sitting behind the drums for The Band, Robbie Robertson, Carly Simon, Bill Evans, Yoko Ono, and many more. He`s performed in master classes and clinics all over the world and has been  writing for Modern drummer mag for 5 years. Listen to this track he plays on of Stuffy Shmitt`s album.

A Joy Division cover, has the right mood to it, and it respects the original and the feel, She`s lost control from Hank and Cupcakes

Buke & Gass Remind me of my days with the NY downtown scene, this wild duo is making real interesting music, maybe a little hard to swallow at first, but is worth the slow digestion. This is a sample of Bundletuck .Buke_&_gass_sample

There is a lot going on top of Zaza`s hypnotic grooves. Ambient soundscapes full of echoed guitars and lush synths lines a pads creates a unique atmosphere. They sound a little like an upgraded 80`s band. They sound real good, this Brooklyn duo and I recommend you check them out.

She lives and breathes art, mainly photography, drawing, music and graphic design. She loves rock concerts and is trying to attend as many as she can. You could find Orly Kottick at most important alternative and indie gigs and if you missed a show, you know she has captured it for you and you`ll be able to find photos on her flickr or facebook pages. She is saying this combination of photography and music is one of the best things that happened to her. These days she owns a modest Canon S5, and hopes that pretty soon she`ll be able to afford pro equipment , but till then, hey, size don`t really matter… (Go to Orlyko`s pages)
