Toro Y Moi

November 18th, 2009

I have received this PR mail about Toro Y Moi. I think I have written about him in the past, and I have read the PR notes about him before listening to the track attached. They were raving about his up and coming release using superlatives such as “groundbreaking, masterpiece, the sound the world is waiting for”.  It is hard listening to a track after what I have read, and stay objective without trying to be extra picky. I have to tell you though, the track is amazing. Sounds so mature, you could hear the heavy influence of Animal Collective ( this is a compliment), layers and layers of sound constantly evolving. You could hear Chaz Bundick treated the smallest details as far as sounds go. I love the l sounds, the melody, the background vocals. The Toro modulation and filtering signature. Sweet sounding! Release date on Carpark records is Feb 2010. Cant wait…

Heavy

November 17th, 2009

Got to listen to this duo, Heavy birds. Listen to their demos, heavy guitars, feedbacks and noises, but somehow, in a magical way, this mayhem is quite organized. The first demo, Marry is kicking although drumless. Heavy birds are Lia Mooney…cello, distortion, tamborine, vox
Ryan Bourque…vox, guitar, harmonica, drum. Their sound is quite original and I would urge them to master those wonderful demos. I wouldn’t touch it.

Sleep Whale

November 14th, 2009

Few days ago Sleep whale have released their debut, Houseboat, recorded at Houseboat studios, on Western vinyl records. After few days of listening to it, I got hooked. Tracks like Icicles, Still drumming, Ferry whistle, Giant wings, all those wonderful sounds, Cello, violins, acoustic guitars, percussives and bells, beautiful textures and soundscapes. This is an acoustic ambient record – real pure, almost holly sounding, most tracks are instrumentals. This is an album Eno would have been proud of. Lots of space between the notes, lets the music breathe. Listen to one of my favorites, Roof sailing. Sleep whale are a Texan band, it`s members are: Bruce Blay, Joel North, Paul North and Spencer Stephenson.

Flight dirty

November 12th, 2009

This collaboration of Guignol & Mischief Brew is being released these days on Fistolo records. This is a beautiful mish mash of folk, punk, rock, klezmer, gypsy music and jazz.
“Flight dirty” contains seven Mischief Brew songs with Guignol as backing band, six Guignol songs with Erik on guitar, a Django Reinhardt cover, and an Iron Maiden cover.
Guignol is led by Franz Nicolay ( The hold steady), Peter Hess (Balkan beat box), George Rush (Hem), John Bollinger (Antony and the Johnsons).
MISCHIEF BREW`s music falls somewhere between the categories of pirate punk, Celtic folk, gypsy swing, devilish jazz, American olde-tyme and country.
Recorded at Vibromonk Studios with Danny Shatzky (Firewater, Balkan Beat Box, Gogol Bordello), GUIGNOL & MISCHIEF BREW’S Fight Dirty collaboration is a fascinating record, so versatile, and whether you are a jazz, pop, folk, gypsy music fan, you should own this one.

Skyscraper crow

November 11th, 2009

For a musician in the need of inspiring surroundings, peace and lots of time to create with no destructions, Vermont seems to be the perfect place. Pretty and peaceful, and extremely cold for a long winter, so the only thing that you would do, is sit by the fireplace, watch the lake, have few bottles of beer, and write. You could hear that on Anders Parker 12th album, the double concept LP titled Skyscraper crow. The Crow portion is acoustic folk, and the Skyscraper is a computer based pop. We especially love the acoustic folky part the Crow, that he wrote while in Berlington, watching the dust float in intense rays of dream light.

Jeff the brotherhood

November 11th, 2009

You should listen to Jeff the brotherhood – a louder project than we usually share with u, but we couldn’t ignore this kick a.. as u could get album, especially if u consider the fact those 2 brothers from Tennessee are making this powerful music with a minimal drum kit and 3 guitar strings. They have been out on the road for 3 years now, supporting heavy acts such as Sonic Youth, Battles, Oneida, Jay Reatard… Their new full length is due now on their family run label – Infinity cat records – yeah, done the way we like it, lofi as u could get…. Tweak it Twig

November 5th, 2009

I have downloaded this amazing double mixtape of Slim Twig called “Spit it Twig” recommended by friends at Bighassle. His unique style is a mixture of hiphop based groove with ragged samples, twisted pop, rock, the funkiest out there theatrical vocals you have heard. its like a collaboration of Tricky, Public Enemy and Outkast. He says he is committed to the free mixtape format he admires so much in artists like Lil Wayne. The first volume is more Hiphop based material while the second one is wilder and more abstract and is featuring collaborations with David Lynch, Dirty Beaches, Onakabazien and more…I love this project a lot and very exited to discover an inspiring artist like Slim Twig, coming from Paper Bag records,.
this wonderful label who brought us Sally Shapiro, CFCF, Woodhands, Plastikman, Tokyo police club, and many more. I have chosen to play you a favorite track from both parts. Thank you Brooke for this gift
