More from The Brothers

January 7th, 2010

themakingof

More from this incredible band, The Ramirez brothers, in Jaffa`s flea market, indoors in a coffee shop and outdoors strolling through the funky alleys. We have 2 parallel sets, one that I was shooting with my tiny home camera, no external sound, no editing, and you could see the results right now. The pro session will be posted later.

A Boom Bap continuum

mixtape

(For those of you who don’t know what Boom Bap is, that is what our dictionary says:

Boom Bap – A style of hip hop signified by a hard bass drum and snapping snare that is often EQed to the forefront of the beat. Some examples include the album “Return of the Boom-bap” by Krs-One, the Duck Down record label.

Boom Bap – boom bap is the roots of hip hop, it’s the real type shit. boom bap refers to the sound of those hardcore drums you find in roots hip hop tracks. ” boom bap////boom bap////boom boom bap////ba boom boom bap”

Boom Bap – Describes the bass drum pattern in the real, oldschool hip-hop tracks. MC Shan – The Bridge listen to this song and you’ll get it…’ boom, bap boomboomboom bap boom boom, bap boomboomboom bap’…

2tall

The players: Jim 2tall, a DJ/producer from London. Laurent Fintoni (AKA Kper), a music journalist and lover and a DJ. DJ Clockwork, a mixtape fanatic and a talented graphic artist.

The masterplan: To do a retrospective mix of what they consider to be the evolution of a sound aesthetic ( they consider boom bap as a sound aesthetic, not a musical genre)

The result: Together they had made the ultimate mixtape of the decade, titled ‘A boom bap continuum’ (You could read more in the attached article about the ‘return of the boom bap’) .

As 2tall describes the initiative of the project:…” My intention is to highlight the lineage of hip hop production & beat making from the turn of the millennium to the present day”…. He calls the era, the ‘post Dilla’ era, and its mostly about crate digging, from the late 90`s up till now.

Kper, who is the man of words out of the three, is talking about the process of making this mixtape, and how it came about: To read the full story

The Ramirez brothers in Jaffa

January 4th, 2010

Picture-297

Yesterday we had a blast, on the set with a video shoot for Lofiles, Kol Hakampus and the students of Hamichlala Leminhal (school for communication studies), filming The Ramirez brothers at the flea market in Jaffa. We shot indoors in a funky gallery of a coffee shop and outside, on the streets of the market, surrounded by suspicious looking characters, vendors and wild scenery. Check this promo out, while the band in a stripped down set, playing Banjo, trumpet and a drummer banging on everything he could lay his drum sticks on.

micachu

This is one of the most original and best bands I have heard recently. Micachu is their name and their hardcore punk folk pop Nintendo core album titled ‘Jewellery” is the real deal. A truly amazing album. Check these guys out.
