Phil & the Osophers

February 12th, 2010

Phil and the Osophers unveil three distinctive videos to titillate the senses. Members of the International Found Footage Society, the band used newsreels from the 1920s-1940s to create the video for Propeller Jet, which narrates the thrill of America’s burgeoning love with the golden age of aviation. Avant-garde Czech films were spliced together to create the breathtaking Well Being video, the last three minutes being a visual and auditory world unto itself. Phil and the Osophers own travel footage is showcased in the video for Wandering Soul, where cities and climates and time blur together. Phil and the Osophers have added a new member! C. Lizbeth Marquez, a Spaniard by birth, has been added to play keyboard, percussion and background vocals. Come see the expanded lineup at Brooklyn’s Bruar Falls on February 15, in a show curated by Pop Jew, also known as Worst Cooks In America winner Rachel Coleman. The band will also be doing a short tour in March, more dates are TBA. Phil and the Osophers made their sixth full length album, Parallelo, available on CD and digitally this summer on Factual Fabrications, Phil’s own sustainable label. The album finds the Brooklyn 3 piece developing into a jingly and jangly artistic indie rock while retaining carefully crafted and philosophical lyrics. The band has a catalog of over 100 songs, and this new album is their most impressive work to date. THE SONGS The 11 song cycle of Parallelo explores parallels and coincidences in our understanding of meaning. Phil has an interesting explanation for all of these songs- “Uses Of A Man deals with equal rights for all lovers”, Creators “is a thesis on God in the time of slavery”, Propeller Jet is “about suiting up with Amelia Earhart on her last flight” “Cheap Livin is an tribute to the rich folks who lost it all” …Tie it together with an avant-garde indie pop sound and you have Parallelo. It is this sort of innovation that makes Phil and the Osophers such a one-of-a-kind act. The Brooklyn 3-piece have been on a tear recently: playing SXSW and the Northside Festival in Brooklyn, as well as playing shows with Art Brut, Passion Pit, Les Savy Fav, Le Loup, the Ruby Suns, and the Dodos. In addition, all 3 members have written and published books of poetry and non-fiction through their own publishing house called ILOANBooks. Bass player Gus has published NINE books, Drummer Kevin has published two (including a new edition entitled “Winter Doesn’t Care What Your Name Is”), and Phil has written his one book of poetry entitled “SHAKE! and other rattlers”. These books are usually free at shows and otherwise available upon request.

Nicole Simone to release debut EP including the first single “Melt” and “The Wedding Song” featuring Jason Schwartzman on drums and banjo.

February 12th, 2010

Although she was born in the eighties, Nicole Simone has always been fascinated with nostalgia and old films from a very young age. She writes all her music with love for creating a mood and environment of her own in which one gets transported into old movie scenes set in a David Lynch-ian smoky nightclub, where Nicole takes the stage in front of the red plush curtains. Her haunting, intoxicating and timeless music is illustrated by a unique instrumentation of guitar, marxophone, orchestron, trumpet, mandolin, vibraphone, piano and ukulele. Nicole just completed her first EP, which will be released on March 9th 2010. On the opening track entitled, “The Wedding Song” actor/musician Jason Schwartzman lent his talents on drums and banjo. Nicole Simone’s music can be heard in the Sundance film The Good Life starring Bill Paxton, Zooey Deschanel, and Harry Dean Stanton, as well as in the indie film Alone With Her starring Colin Hanks. Her diverse artistic influences range from Frederic Chopin to Tom Waits and New Orleans funeral processions to the likes of Howlin’ Wolf, Billie Holiday and Cesária Évora. Nicole Simone’s first music video for the song “Melt” was shot near the Joshua Tree desert. The video is an homage to one of Nicole’s favorite films, Wim Wenders Paris, Texas as well as inspired by French New Wave directors such as Jean-Luc Godard and Louis Malle. You can see the stunning and intriguing music video here.magazine featured Nicole in their music issue alongside Bryan Ferry, Ryan Adams and Charlotte Gainsbourg. She has played support slot for artists such as Ed Harcourt, Jesca Hoop, Maria Taylor and Diane Birch. Nicole Simone co-produced her EP with Zac Rae and Woody Jackson. Gavin Lurssen mastered the EP.

Neon Indian playing Bonnaroo & more new tour dates

February 12th, 2010

It’s shaping up to be a big 2010 for Neon Indian, just as SPIN predicted. The band made its network television debut this Thursday night, Feb. 11 on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. The band was also recently announced as part of the Bonnaroo 2010 line-up and will be hitting the US and European Summer festival circuit with a vengeance (stay tuned for more on that!). Neon Indian recently remixed Grizzly Bear’s track “Cheerleader” not once, but twice, if you haven’t heard those remixes yet, listen here, stay tuned for many more high profile remixes to be unleashed throughout the year. The band’s Laundromatinee session was also recently posted on My Old Kentucky Blog.

An elusive new project from composer Alan Palomo. Neon Indian delivers equal parts synthetic nostalgia, Dreampop lullabies, and grinding guitar noise to create something eerier than the sum of its parts. Forged after a hazy winter gathering in Texas, this initial batch of tracks were the result of field recordings, record samples, a collection of bizarre synth sounds. Orbiting around the themes of drug induced heartbreak, weary afternoons, and lost chances, this music provides a lush soundtrack to the deadbeat exploits of teenage ennui. Neon Indian’s bedroom ballads have already forged Psychic Chasms, the debut full-length. They’ve been compared to New Order, Future Bible Heroes, and most recently said to sound like a saw-wave cutting a Doobie Brother’s song in half. Expect much racket to be had from this fresh-faced crew. Listen to Terminally Chill

Sleepy Sun Announce Tour Dates With Arctic Monkeys Contribute Track To Be Yourself: A Tribute to Graham Nash’s Songs for Beginners Play South By Southwest & Bro Fest 2010 Embrace Out NOW On ATP Records

February 12th, 2010

Whether droning madly, spiralling into cascades of infinitely echoing vocals or kicking back with their blissed-out take on classic Americana rock, Sleepy Sun are a band that demand your attention. Formed in Santa Cruz and now based in San Francisco, this intense sextet are set to release their latest single, Sleepy Son (sic), taken from their breathtaking debut album, Embrace, in August.

Comprising Brian Tice (drums), Jack Allen (bass), Rachael Williams (vocals, haberdashery & interpretive dancing) Bret Constantino (vocals & harmonica), Evan Reiss (guitars) and Matt Holliman (guitars) – all 22 and 23, the band met in the counter-cultural hub city of Santa Cruz, California, citing “pizza, horticulture, Neil Percival Young,” as common interests. “With the forest and ocean as our back drop, we were drawn to each other as fellow musicians, friends, and lovers” they say.

Drawing musical inspiration from Black Sabbath, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Can and Creation Records, they forged their sound in intense jams, “free flowing, heady, ‘where am I?’ type jamming.”

Though they’re in the one-time home of psychedelia, it’s not San Francisco per se that influences their sound. “It comes more from Northern California itself more than any scene or city,” they say. “There truly is nowhere on Earth like our little corner of the country where the redwoods smother the ocean.”

What are you waiting for? Let’s Get Weird!
