The Blow announces tour dates, plans for new EP later this year

April 23rd, 2010

After a year’s hiatus from performing, The Blow’s Khaela Maricich is stepping back onto the stage with a new body of material. She is presenting a new set of songs, along with a narrative stage performance to accompany the music. The Blow recently opened a string of concerts for Vampire Weekend, and there had the opportunity to try out the fresh material in a large venue format. The upcoming tour of the Northeast is planned as a workshop, where Maricich can test out and develop performance elements in intimate settings. For the upcoming album and performance cycle, Maricich is working in collaboration with installation and sound artist Melissa Dyne. Dyne will augment the live Blow performances and recordings with her expertise in accoustics, light, and spatial phenomena. The Blow is currently at work on a full length album, and plans to release an EP of new material later in 2010. The Blow has recently performed segments of the new work at The Baltimore Museum of Art, Harvard University, and Pulse Art Fair in Miami.

MY GURU YEARS

April 23rd, 2010

..”Guru, the gravel-voiced rapper who as a member of the duo Gang Starr was one of the most expressive rappers of the 1990s and a major figure in bridging hip-hop and jazz, died Monday in New York. He was 47″.

“I, Guru, am writing this letter to my fans, friends and loved ones around the world. I have had a long battle with cancer and have succumbed to the disease. I have suffered with this illness for over a year. I have exhausted all medical options. I have a non-profit organization called Each One Counts dedicated to carrying on my charitable work on behalf of abused and disadvantaged children from around the world and also to educate and research a cure for this terrible disease that took my life. I write this with tears in my eyes, not of sorrow but of joy for what a wonderful life I have enjoyed and how many great people I have had the pleasure of meeting.” (Guru`s last words in a letter he had left his best friend and collaborator of recent years MC Solar).

Junip

April 19th, 2010

It`s not the first time I write about Jose Gonzales, and I guess no need to introduce him to you guys. I love what he was doing in the past, just his unique playing, tunings, strumming or picking, and this voice you could recognize standing 2 miles away. Now he is back with a band, Junip, but don’t worry, it doesn’t take away of the JG magic or sound. With the help of drummer Elias Araya, that sounds just right; No over playing, simple and to the point, he hears what the song needs, and this great Organ/ elec piano/keyboard guy Tobias Winterkorn.

Nirvana, by Kurt Cobain

April 19th, 2010

Yes, that`s the title of this song. Behind the scenes:…” I wrote this song after our car engine exploded in Ocala, Florida. We were stuck in the cheapest motel we could find living off a dollar menu at the Wendy’s across the street while witnessing our credit card debt mount as we paid for a new engine, and waited for the mechanics to fix the car. We had no income, I read at least five books in about two days and eventually even resorted to turning on the TV.

Feeling somewhat jailed to our fate, tour had already been plagued with bad luck and my wife was suffering (though bravely and silently) from the strain of finances and the constant struggle that makes up surviving on tour”… Drew Danburry

The Luyas

I like The Luyas. I like the ad on their myspace (above), and I guess the New York crowd likes them too, cause the added few shows in NYC. So dont miss this great band, and just in case you have doubts, listen to this track:
