Philadelphia pop quartet Drink Up Buttercup released their first full length album, Born and Thrown on a Hook on March 23, 2010 via Yep Roc Records.

April 16th, 2010

Philadelphia pop quartet Drink Up Buttercup released their first full length album, Born and Thrown on a Hook on March 23, 2010 via Yep Roc Records. First brought to the attention of music fans through their debut ‘Sosey & Dosey’ 7” on Brooklyn’s Kanine Records (Grizzly Bear, Chairlift), the Philly group comprised of Jim Harvey (vocals, guitar), Ben Money (bass, organ), Mike Cammarata (drums) and Farzad Houshiarnejad (keyboards) stormed CMJ and SXSW and earned early praise. Described as, “Beatle-esque but in a kitchen sink kind of way,” (Brooklyn Vegan) and “60’s psychedelic carnival” (Stereogum) the band’s nuanced yet bombastic live show is a vital part of its growing legend, with the New York Times saying that DUB, “mesmerizes and clobbers live.” Drink Up Buttercup may hail from Philadelphia but the geography of their debut album is less easily located on a physical map. It’s an occasionally surreal mythology filled with tales of hopelessly flawed characters, star-crossed lovers, drunks, fairy tales & bad trips. It exists in a world touched upon previously by Tom Waits, Hans Christian Anderson and Lloyd Kaufman while musically it follows the direct lineage of classic songwriting: Bowie, The Beatles & The Beach Boys’ late 60s lysergia, early Roxy Music, Sabbath’s bass heavy pulse & the crescendos of Arcade Fire. Born and Thrown on a Hook, produced by sought after Philly go-to-guy Bill Moriarty (Dr. Dog, Man Man) and mixed by Rusty Santos (Animal Collective, Final Fantasy, Panda Bear), follows the ‘Even Think’ 7” (their first release on Yep Roc) which enjoyed remixes from Andrew W.K. and electro-pop maestro Cale Parks. The release of their debut full-length foreshadows a busy 2010 for DUB, with the band booking shows by the fistful to build on live buzz created through tireless east coast gigging, as well as by having shared the stage with talented bands like Dr. Dog, Bishop Allen, Marnie Stern, Fiery Furnaces, Blood Warrior, Stellastarr and Free Energy.

Hank & Cupcakes

April 13th, 2010

Hank, surrounded by tons of pedal boards, distortion, chorus, pitch shifter, loopers and delays, triggering keyboard sounds and samples, a great bass player amplified by the trustworthy hands of GK, and the lovely Cupcakes, an amazing drummer, extremely feminine with a monster hit, hitting the drums while standing and singing. Saw them at this tiny place, a killer set, the only criticism is that it was too short. Groovy as f….hell, watch out for my HD videos, up in a few. In the meantime, check them out HERE and HERE

Sorry for the poor image quality of my mobile phone..

Kept Impulses Tour with Hauschka, Nancy Elizabeth & James Blackshaw, May 2010

April 10th, 2010

Performing collaboratively for the first time, prepared piano player Hauschka, 12-string guitarist James Blackshaw, and singer/songwriter Nancy Elizabeth play their beautifully matched music together in a contoured programme of solo and ensemble performances.

We wrote about hauschka and Blackshow before (check archives), but it is the first time we mention Nancy Elizabeth

“Nancy Elizabeth (The Leaf Label) has that something special. The songs of this Northern English multi-instrumentalist with a beautifully unadorned voice are slowly burning their way into the life of those who fall for her deft way with atmospherics and heart tugging emotions. She sings extraordinarily magical yet honest songs and has that ability to move audiences into appreciative wonderment with her performances. Nancy has that unquestionable strength of conviction which when combined with her emotionally terse lyrics and lack of fluffiness makes for a singer that stands apart from her peers.

Nancy’s long awaited second album ‘Wrought Iron’ is out this October on Leaf and is getting incredible reviews. She has also recently been recording with James Yorkston and Susumu Yokota as well as playing with Efterklang, Seth Lakeman, Tunng, and Rachel Unthank and The Winterset. Winning sets at Roskilde and Bestival over the summer warmed her to new fans. She has toured folk clubs, concert halls and cafes in Mexico, Spain, Manchester and beyond.”

Deer Tick shares first MP3 from The Black Dirt Sessions

April 10th, 2010

Recorded late last year at Black Dirt Studios in upstate New York, The Black Dirt Sessions is a deeply personal record from Deer Tick and most especially from lead vocalist and songwriter John McCauley. It is the sound of a band coming into its own, finding its voice and pouring its collective heart out. The comparisons that have often been thrust upon McCauley by the press seem to fall away as his own voice comes through more clearly. On songs like “Goodbye, Dear Friend” and “Christ Jesus” which find McCauley alone at the piano, about as naked as you can possibly get on record. The Black Dirt version of “Christ Jesus,” which also appeared on War Elephant, manages to be even more devastating than the original.

We love Jesse Merchant

April 9th, 2010

Jesse Marchant (JBM) was lauded by iTunes as a top singer/songwriter of 2009. Only recently immersing himself back into music writing lyrics, singing and recording, JBM has the lush and haunting vocals that are reminiscent of his musical peers – Jim James or Justin Vernon (Bon Iver). Marchant’s debut album not even in July (April 13th, Partisan Records) was made in just two weeks, but it embodies a meticulous and carefully crafted sound that could take a lifetime to achieve. not even in July is a collection of ten heartfelt compositions that billow, ripple and glide by softly with measured persistence and spectral beauty. Fresh on the heels of a nationwide tour with Sondre Lerche, JBM is on the road with Rogue Wave right now. Listen to Ambitions & War – not even in July

The Luyas by Vincent Moon

April 9th, 2010

Words By Vincent Moon:

The Luyas have been my favourite band for the past year and a half. Listening to their music has always been an intense adventure, a little trip over the ocean, over an ocean, wherever I was. The balance between Jessie’s voice and their constant subtle experiments on pop formats was already obsessing me, but I will never forget this little film we did in Montreal, over an afternoon in october 2009. Never before such a musical genius was so obvious, so easy to follow, so exciting to film. The simple way Jessie Stein is always challenging her audience when playing is a little miracle of sincerity and dedication.

El Parasito

April 9th, 2010

El Parasito (the parasite in Spanish) is a lofi bedroom instrumental hip hop artist. He calls himself El Parasito cause he clings to a track like a parasite, a leach and makes it his own. I have heard few track of this wonderful project of his, one using vocal samples of a 30`s Mahalia Jackson song, one with a sentence of jazz singer Jeanne Lee, and another featuring guitars samples of Steve Tibbettes. I chose to attach ‘Play with me’, with Mahalia Jackson on vocal.
