MOREL Premieres “Shoegazer Disco

May 21st, 2010

Multi-talented producer, singer/songwriter and DJ, Richard Morel (aka MOREL) returns with his explosive new single “Shoegazer Disco” (The Remixes): the first in a series of remix packages highlighting stand-out tracks from his acclaimed third studio album ‘Death Of The Paper Boy’ (issued on his own Outsider Music imprint). The blistering set features dynamic reconstructions from electronic pop heavyweight LINUS LOVES, Finnish tech-house maestro ROBERTO RODRIGUEZ and newcomer FUZZ MONO.

Renowned for his signature, deep and progressive, electronic dance-rock sound, he’s become an in-demand singer/songwriter, producer, collaborator and remixer (working under his PINK NOISE alias) crafting anthems for an impressive list of artists including CYNDI LAUPER, PET SHOP BOYS, NEW ORDER, DEPECHE MODE, YOKO ONO, LA ROUX, THE KILLERS and LILY ALLEN.

As a DJ, Mor el is one half of BLOWOFF (alongside partner / seminal US punk icon BOB MOULD of HÜSKER DÜ/ SUGAR). The pair’s bi-monthly ‘Blowoff” residency at Washington DC’s legendary 930 Club has become one of the city’s most celebrated club nights (where capacity crowds are treated to a blistering soundtrack melding sleazy disco, dark progressive house, post-punk classics and voracious synth-pop nuggets) earning them equally successful residencies in NYC and San Francisco.

Acclaimed indie dream-pop group SCHOOL OF SEVEN BELLS will release the latest single from their forthcoming album Disconnect from Desire on June 1st.

The band’s new album, produced by band member Benjamin Curtis and mixed by Jack Joseph Puig, was recorded in the band’s home studio and mixed in Los Angeles at Ocean Way Recording. Disconnect from Desire is a tremendous leap forward for the band musically, evident in all elements of their intricate and multi-layered sound. Further, the unique experience of playing live allowed them to step out of their sometimes-insular creative process, and to discover and explore a newfound connectivity with listeners. This connection to the external world is reflected throughout the new album and indicative of the trio’s development.

SCHOOL OF SEVEN BELLS, composed of Benjamin Curtis and identical twins Alejandra and Claudia Deheza, released their debut album Alpinisms in 2008. Paste Magazine called it “a psychedelic excursion anchored by beautiful, winding melodies and entrancing synth backdrops as bright and buoyant as a wall of clouds.” They have also been featured in the pages of Rolling Stone, Spin, Details, the NME and others. The band has since toured with Blonde Redhead and Bat For Lashes, among others.

In support of the new album, which arrives July 13th on Vagrant/Ghostly International, the three-piece will play a show at the Echo in Los Angeles on June 2nd, followed by two nights at New York City’s Mercury Lounge. Tour dates below.

I love Jana Hunter. And I love Lower Dens and their sound. Those distorted guitars, feedbacks, lofi drums, you got to be hooked to her full of character vocals.

Extra Life’s “Head Shrinker” Remixed by Battles’ Tyondai Braxton

May 20th, 2010

Taken from Extra Life’s lauded sophomore album Made Flesh, out now on LOAF, “Head Shrinker” gets a unique re-invention by Braxton as a futuristic robo disco group. The remix is off of the band’s forthcoming remix EP, Splayed Flesh, coming out June 22nd on Planaria/Sockets. I love remixes like these, imaginative, creative, and  have been listening to this track for the longest

Extra Life will be touring Europe throughout May and June in support of Made Flesh and Splayed Flesh.

Dub Trio

May 18th, 2010

First time I was introduced to this kick a.. trio was in Berlin, when they were playing with Matisyahu, and supporting him doing their part. They were playing tracks of this album, Another sound is dying, kind of a mixture between Dub Pistols and Living Color. They are tight. Sound good, I love their unique bass sound, and you should go to see Dub Trio if they are playing at the theatre near you.

Broken Bells

May 18th, 2010

Last night I was working on experimental music, you know, try to sound sophisticated, and surprisingly enough, It worked. I got up this morning though, looking for good popular music to balance things out and found it, listening to Broken Bells. Boy, these guys can write songs, arrange and produce, I mean I don’t know who produced these guys, but they sound great. I was debating if I should include them here, at the temple of…. But f.. it. I enjoyed it, maybe you could as well
