Twin Shadow`s Forget on Terrible records this coming fall

June 19th, 2010

The verse B part on ‘I cant wait’, is such a wonderful Peter Gabrielish vocal line, There is a tremendous talent here, Twin Shadow could be huge. TS`s music was created and recorded mostly in his bedroom, with Chris Taylor (Grizzly Bear) of Terrible records sitting at the controls for final touches, producing his debut titled Forget, out this fall on Terrible records.

OBERHOFER with a killer track – 19 year old Brad with Away from you. Listen to the classic guitar intro riff. No wonder they tour with another hero of ours, Twin Shadow. These guys are young, but give them few years and I am sure we are for a real treat – remember that name – Oberhofer.

Waltz with Max

June 18th, 2010

The first time I was exposed to Max Richter`s composing abilities was on the ‘Waltz with Bashir’ soundtrack.

On his latest, Infra, out on Fatcat, July 19th:

Originally conceived as a Royal Ballet-commissioned collaboration between composer Max Richter, choreographer Wayne McGregor and artist Julian Opie, is deservedly given life of its own in this album-length release from FatCat’s instrumental/orchestral imprint 130701 Records.

The initial setting for ‘infra’ was as a ballet – written in autumn 2008 and premiered in November of the same year at The Royal Opera House in London – although here Richter’s score is given the full scope of a standalone new album. Expanded and extended from the original piece, INFRA comprises music written for piano, electronics and string quintet, including the full performance score as well as material that has subsequently developed from the construction of the album – more a continued reference to the ballet than as a “studio album” in the strictest sense. The composition resonates with Max’s characteristic musical voice – majestic, involved textures; fluent and sweeping melodies; an enigmatic and inherently intellectual understanding of harmonic complexities that compels and mesmerizes.

Richter’s work on the ballet came initially from McGregor’s invitiation, a request for 25 minutes of music for his piece, inspired by T.S. Elliot’s ‘The Wasteland’ and named after the Latin term for ‘below’. This eventually became more collaborative as the project developed – Wayne would ask for Max to extend or alter certain passages of music in accordance with his own amendments to his choreography and concept, whilst logging the whole process for a BBC documentary (broadcast, along with the ballet in full, on BBC2 in November 2008). The dance performance was backed with digital images created by Julian Opie – observational scenes of street life, haunting and curiously balletic despite being of the everyday – and Max’s score is an appropriately close reference to the traveling theme:

“I started thinking about making a piece on the theme of journeys. Like a road movie. Or a traveler’s notebook. Or like the second unit in a film – when the scene has been played, and the image cuts away to the landscape going by. This started me thinking about Schubert’s devastating and haunting “Winterreise” (Winter Journey), so I used some melodic material from Schubert as a found object in parts of my new piece.“

The recording of ‘infra’ took place in one day at London’s AIR Studios – recorded onto 2” tape, engineered by Nick Wollage and overseen by Max – before a return to the mixing studio (Max’s StudioKino and Trixx in Berlin) for Max’s typically intricate and lengthy process of crafting completed pieces from the recordings.

No Pussyfooting

June 15th, 2010

The image of the ‘No Pussyfooting’ cover, a very influential record for me, by Brian Eno* and Robert Fripp, caught my attention while going through their Myspace profile page. No pussyfooting was mentioned as a big influence on them as well, and it made me listen to Viernes music. Viernes are Alberto Hernandez and Sean Moore. I got to tell you, I am deeply impressed, especially after aiming so high. The music of the two dudes coming from Winter Park FL, the dreamlike soundscapes created by instruments such as Moore`s old Warlitzer piano inherited from his late father, and Hernandez father`s Puerto Rican cuatro. Awesome music, my friends. Sinister devices is Out on Kanine records,  a label that brought us Grizzly bear, Chailift, Drink up buttercup and many more.

*  I have promised myself not to mention Brian Eno, because of his dreadful opinions and shameful activities, about subjects he hardly knows a thing about ( talking about the situation in the middle east. I am hurt by his actions and opinions, and I know there are many friends and music lovers that loved his musical contribution and ideas, and it is hard for me to believe, that a man I once thought to be wise, made such ignorant moves.

Cloudland canyon is the indie sister of Animal Collective. I would say it’s a raw form of the collective. Heavy ambient mayhem. Noise, samples , distorted notes with crazy delays and loops. Headphone madness. Perfect listen in between the South African World cup final. If you are looking for soothing music in the background, well, this is not your band. We love it though, and find it challenging. Out on Intercoastal artists, a new record label located in north America.
