“Fences will release its debut album on September 28 through Onto Entertainment/ADA. The band is the of moniker 27 year-old Christopher Mansfield, a self proclaimed fuck up, who uses it to perform and record under. The Seattle-based artist’s first full length was produced by Sara Quin of Tegan and Sara fame and shares a kindred down-trodden spirit to the music of Elliott Smith and Townes Van Zandt.

Mansfield’s musical life started in Boston where he spent his late teens studying music at the prestigious Berkelee School of Music. His girlfriend of the time was studying the plays of August Wilson and suggested that Mansfield name his band after the famed playwright’s most beloved play, Fences.

A few years later he moved to Seattle recording songs that would come to together as the self released “Ultimate Puke” EP

“Ultimate Puke” ended up in the hands of a young producer who passed it onto Sara Quin. A producer in her own right, she immediately took to the music and sent Mansfield a message, beginning a long correspondence and friendship. After a year of writing back and forth, Quin asked Mansfield the question he had been hoping for: “Do you have a passport?” Within weeks, Mansfield was at Quin’s studio in Victoria, B.C., for a ten-day stint, clocking 12 hour days while recording 13 songs. Ten of those songs would become the full-length debut, Fences.”

I have written about Nicole Simone clip for Melt on the News section, 2 months ago. I have listened to it again today and I love this simple arrangement and wanted to share it with you.

This is what the newsletter I have received is saying:” Nicole Simone releases her self-titled debut EP to critical acclaim, including the first single “Melt” and “The Wedding Song” featuring Jason Schwartzman on drums and banjo. Her New York debut performance on June 14th is not to be missed as the players in her New York band include Kelly Pratt (Beirut, Arcade Fire, The Citizens Band), Jon Natchez (Beirut, Arcade Fire), Mark McAdam, Dave Treut and Kevin Thaxton. On June 29th Nicole Simone will celebrate the release of her EP with a show at Hotel Café with her all-star Los Angeles band consisting of Stewart Cole (Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros), Josh Grange (Dwight Yoakam) and Joe Karnes (John Cale, Pete Yorn).

Wavves announces album details for King of the Beach

June 4th, 2010

Nathan Williams and his sensational band Wavves is coming out with ‘King of the Beach’, a new album. King of the Beach is an adventurous and ambitious record. It cuts deeper into the bleeding throat catharsis and ’60s sunshine soul that Wavves is known for. It also unexpectedly flips out with elements of primitive electronics and psychedelic studio experimentation.

Unlike Wavves’ previously released material, recorded in haphazard bursts on Williams’ laptop, King of the Beach was toiled over for three months at Sweet Tea Recording, a world-renown studio in Oxford, Mississippi. Sweet Tea is also the home of Dennis Herring, producer of the last two Modest Mouse albums, and the man who dismantled and re-assembled the sound on this record. Listen to   Mickey Mouse

Los Angeles-based electronic-pop artist Active Child releases his debut EP titled Curtis Lane on FILTER US Recordings today. The EP can be purchased digitally through the iTunes music store HERE or on 10″ white vinyl, which is available through his official Web site.

Active Child is the new project from choirboy-turned-indie pop musician Pat Grossi. The influence of chorale singing, along with the sensibility of non-secular music, is as apparent in Active Child’s work as the influence of cherished pop bands like New Order, Joy Division and Tears for Fears. Active Child has already garnered complimentary critical praise from the likes of notable outlets such as NME, The Guardian, LA Weekly, Pitchfork, Stereogum and many others.

I have mentioned Jose Gonzales and  his recent musical venture Junip  few weeks ago. I have heard a song my friend sent me that had featured Mia Doi Todd. Her seventh album ‘GEA’ opener, ‘River of life’ is built around Jose Gonzales unique playing, open classical guitar arpeggios , and a hypnotic percussion and eastern soundscape bringing it home. Buy the record.
