‘Wide awake’ by Arches: “This is a concept album about a character who lives alone in a city. Mundane routines drive the character to flee the city and become a drifter. The character’s perspective of reality becomes convoluted with memories and current travels to the point where the character becomes unable to decipher past and present experiences”. For some reason it takes me back to The Antlers last album, ‘Hospice‘, which is another great concept album, and Arches succeeded in creating the same strong environment. Could be real hard to to tell a touching and honest story these days, but these guys do.

Again and again, when we come across a lofi pop gem like Die Jungen`s 6 track album, the latest project of Southampton resident Klaus von Barrel, (mainly known for his work with The KVB), and we add another bedroom project to our resume, we feel we achieve our goal by exposing those almost completely hidden talents. This venture is a gorgeous mix of lofi pop 50`s style, dark, hazy and melancholic.I love what Henning, our friend from No Fear in Pop wrote about Closer to the end, talks about the fading memory of our youth. He says that we guess it wont be all good at the end, but at least we would be able to find comfort in music like this, music that would soothe the great pain.Special thanks to Henning for the find.
Northern-Spy Records reveals its first release in a new cassette series entitled “Clandestine.” Limited to 150 copies, pro dubbed on chrome tape cassettes. Four artists offer a release that’s not so much cloak and dagger as uncovering forward directions in music. From the opening drones and understated beats of Messages through the fret-board perambulations of Tom Carter (whose full-length project, Eleven Twenty-Nine, is forthcoming from N-Spy). Side two is no less revealing as psychedelic drone virtuoso Zaimph (Marcia Bassett) shares a side with avant-folk legend Loren Connors during a live encounter at Union Pool with bassist Margarida Garcia. This is a sample of Indian Landmark.
When you listen to Woom, you think of pop contemporaries that have completely changed the sound of indie music like Animal Collective, Tune-Yards, and Micachu and the Shapes. Woom generates music that is timeless as it is strange and new.
‘Muu’s Way’, out this summer on Ba Da Bing, showcases the fruits of Eben Portnoy and Sara Magenheimer’s 6-year collaboration. Beneath its incredibly detailed DIY production brims a wild, uncontainable energy. Skittering beats, deep-diving bass, crumbling guitars and crackling voices swarm around exceptionally unique pieces.
This is the last of four video loops based on the seasons commissioned by the Berkeley Art Museum. This one is Winter and was screened in conjunction with the exhibition, Flowers of the Four Seasons: Ten Centuries of Art from the Clark Center for Japanese Art and Culture, and curated by Tomo Yasuda.
Music “Under Muu” by WOOM from the album “Muu’s Way” Badabing Records 2010.
If you like Fever Ray, Cat Power, or Shilpa Ray, I am sure you`ll appreciate the sound of Teen, Kristina Lieberson`s (from Here we go magic) new side project. Sparse, haunting and hypnotic, and we feel the sweet sensation we experience when we discover a new meaningful piece of art. Listen to Teen`s demo, Cannibal.
There is nothing too glorious about Travis Trevisan`s life, as you could hear while listening to ‘Secret serf’, The new EP by TDM, exploring themes of poverty and privacy, talking about unemployment and trying to make ends
meet, while sonically, Tape deck mountain have matured, as you could hear while listening to “It goes down”.
Secret Serf was released January 11, 2011 on Lefse Records.
Kenny Hamilton AKA Spacemonster has recorded those tape hiss jamz at his bedroom, a venture he had titled Gills, condessing he was fasting a day before recording those extremely minimalistic lofi tracks. The art is on us as a free bonus.
Listen to Gills
We love Chappo. This one isn’t an exeption. Mastard pimp with a perfect kick ass remix for ‘Come home’
