TJO

April 22nd, 2011

Songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Tara Jane ONeil creates melodic and experimental music under her own name and in collaboration with other artists, musicians, and filmmakers. Her work innately crosses genres and boundaries—ranging from melodic songcraft melded with experimental noise, live performances ( solo songing to large ensemble improvisation) to dance, film and theater scores.

Her musical life started at the tender age of 19 as the bass player for the art-punk ensemble Rodan in her hometown of Louisville, Kentucky. During the 1990’s, she had collaborated with many other groups. In New York City, she recorded her first solo album, ‘Peregrine’, in the bathtub of her Ludlow Street apartment; its 2000 release on Quarterstick Records marked the start of a series of and beautiful solo releases, most recently A Ways Away ( K records 2010).

She has lived in the Pacific Northwest since 2003. While writing her own music, ONeil has also collaborated with Papa M, Mount Eerie, Ida, Mirah, Michael Hurley, Jackie-O Motherfucker, and the King Cobra, among others; she founded the Ecstatic Tambourine Orchestra. She has scored soundtracks for film and theater; and composed experimental performances for large ensembles. ONeil is also an accomplished visual artist whose paintings and drawings have exhibited worldwide, and appeared on several record covers and in numerous publications; Two books of her artwork have been published, ‘Who Takes A Feather’ (Map Press, Japan, 2003) and ‘Wings. Strings. Meridians: A Blighted Bestiary’ (Yeti, 2007.)

Here’s TJO`s upcoming full-length collaboration with Japanese vocalist Nikaido Kazumi, entitled “Ruh Roh”, that will be released May 2011 on K Records. She is currently working on a collection of instrumental work, and a new book of drawings for Publication Studios.

Midi and the Modern Dance

April 21st, 2011

Received this mail from CT;…” I’m a student at Wesleyan University, and just wanted to give you guys a heads up about some really great CT bands that I’ve stumbled upon recently”…We are always on the search for new material and the first song blew us away. This song is by Omeed Goodarzi with his band ‘Midi and the Modern Dance’. I know nothing about this guy but I love what Hannah wrote about him..” I first heard Midi and the Modern Dance in 2007 when they were in 10th grade and had just released their first EP. A friend of mine had gone to a guitar camp with Omeed Goodarzi, the lead singer and founder of Midi, and rushed back after the summer was over to tell me about him. To me, Midi and the Modern Dance sounds like being 16. Iit’s an exquisite amalgamation of primal, adolescent angst and desperation that somehow manages to avoid amateurish pretension. This is music to blast in your car after your girlfriend rips your heart out or -even worse- after you’ve realized that the guy you’re pining over doesn’t even know you exist. Their live shows, believe it or not, are even better than their recordings- hot and sweaty and perfect. The band is currently scattered between colleges in various states but if they get enough buzz they might take some time off to tour properly’….Hannah Baker

Breathless

April 20th, 2011

We don’t really give a flying f… that Pitchfork gave them 5.5 and was criticizing the s…out of their vocal performance. I`ll tell you one thing. I have been listening making and breathing music for more than 3 decades now and nofrickinone could tell me this doesn’t work bigtime, and not only that, Young Prisms Breathless video and track kicks some serious butt…

Peakin lights

April 20th, 2011

This is a nasty combination: Groove, melody, musical parts and psychedlia. Peaking lights are more than a Dub groove oriented band. Their basics might come from classic dub, but their tone is so rich and hazy, and hypnotizes you. Listening to the fifth track on 936, Hey sparrow, makes me forget everything I wanted to leave behind. Plus watch this great video of that same album, ‘All the sun that shines’. 936 is out on Not not fun.

Every dog has it`s afternoon

April 16th, 2011

Nico Giarrano has been releasing music as Places for a little while now, and March is his first attempt at stringing together a full set of songs,. This is another extremely creative bedroom pop project, like the ones we enjoy discovering.

The album is quite versatile, and although you could always blame lofi for everything that is off, Nico succeeded in creating a perfect balance between skills and the rough spontanious ‘accidental’ stuff. Great combination of distorted vocals, dry lofi drums, cool sounding guitars, this is a dude that could really go far with them skills and his musical and artistic ability. I have chosen to share this demo with you..
