El Obo

April 12th, 2011

Paste Magazine just announced Jesse Coppenbarger  (Colour Revolt)  new solo record under the El Obo moniker, ‘Oxford Basement Collection is out May 10. This debut album is released as a deluxe vinyl edition (limited to 1,000 copies on blue vinyl) that also contains a copy of the album (with 3 bonus tracks) on CD enclosed in the LP jacket. Download the first single, and pre-order here. This is a songwriter to watch, and a great album, recorded with the assistance of former Fletcher bandmate Steven Bevilaqua to fill in gaps/holes and pull the sound together.

Shitgazed

April 11th, 2011

Psychedelic Horseshit are a gloriously messy band rooted in lo-fi punk experimentation, allthough they’ve kept a step ahead of the lo-fi scene by inventing a new sub genre they have christened ‘shitgaze’. Hailing from Colombus, Ohio, the Rust Belt capital MTV described as “ground zero for lo-fi punk, They began using a bunch of battered equipment, recording to four-track cassette, with a cardboard box for a bass drum and junkshop guitars and keyboards. All of a sudden, via a joke reference on their myspace page, ‘shitgaze‘ (the lo-fi genre-term they coined in satire of the early-’90s British shoegaze phenomenon) blew up and found them getting interviewed by MTV as well as being written up everywhere from Spin to NME. In 2010, a limited edition cassette, ‘Acid Tape’ signalled a move towards something more dazed and liquified, increasingly electronic.Signing to FatCat in late 2010, Psychedelic Horseshit‘s debut album for the label, ‘Laced‘, is due out in May 2011. ‘Puff’, the first track of ‘Laced‘, has inspired me to create this graphic scribble, and glued me to my tiny headphones for the last couple of hours or so…

Cloud 9

April 10th, 2011

While taking my daily walk earlier, I have decided to put Yo La Tengo`s ‘I am not afraid of you and I will beat your ass’ on. Some songs by this trio El Jezel, remind me of YLT. El Jezel is a shoegaze-influenced three piece consisting of members George Flanagan (guitar, vocals), Jessica Flanagan (bass, vocals) and Dan Killoren (drums) from Astoria (Queens), New York. By the way, did I mention George has a cloudphotomania?

Natureboy

April 9th, 2011

Natureboy is the musical project of Sara Kermanshahi, a first generation American of Iranian descent. Along with long time collaborator/producer Cedar Apffel and joined by Rory O’Connor (Masterface) on drums and keyboards, Natureboy recorded their self-titled debut which received its official release on Own records in July 2010. Natureboy makes different kind of acoustic folk, dreamy and haunting, by using a perfect blend of Sara`s vocals, backgrounds, pads and electric & acoustic guitars.

…and She sounds as good as she looks. Believe it or not.

Room 205 with Daedelus

April 6th, 2011

Incase is pleased to premiere Episode Seven of Room 205 with Daedelus. LA-based electronic musician, Alfred Darlington (a.k.a. Daedelus), will be celebrating his 10-year recording anniversary with the new album, Bespoke, coming out this month on Ninja Tune. Throughout his prolific career Daedelus has released singles and EPs for Brainfeeder, All City, Magical Properties, Alpha Pup Records, Warp and Stones Throw. He’s regarded by many as a producer’s producer and a musician’s musician, frequently collaborating with fellow artists and audiophiles to explore new sounds and techniques in the realm of electronic music.

For his Room 205 episode, Daedelus wanted to re-imagine our space as a Victorian-era séance. So, with a bit of help from director Michael Reich and set designer Tamarra Younis, that’s exactly what he did. With genuine kid-like enthusiasm we present the first installment of Room 205: Episode Seven with Daedelus. “Scaling Snowdon (Slow Climb Version)” is available for audio and video streaming today through Room 205’s virtual home. The second and third installments will be available April 11th and 18th respectively. – Los Angeles – April 4, 2011

Back

It`s been since Julian Lynch has moved to Madison, where he had been studying for a Master’s program in Ethnomusicology and recorded and released three CD-R’s under his given name: Born2Run, Birthday and Garden is Adventure, that he had been developing this heavily ethno acoustic influenced recognizable style of his. In 2009 and 2010, Olde English  Spelling Bee released two LPs by Julian Lynch, Orange You Glad and Mare, respectively. Julian continues to live and record in Madison, where he is currently enrolled in a joint PhD program in Ethnomusicology and Anthropology. On April 26th , Underwater Peoples Records will release his third LP, Terra.

The Reel Deal

April 5th, 2011

If Louis Vasquez is involved, I got to check it out. We have been Soft moon groupies since day one. Another reason to be curious about this project, is that it`s been released by Knitting Factory records, and I still remember the days while visiting The venue at the original location on Houston street, listening to all those friends and bands, who were part of the extremely active NYC downtown scene, great talents and musicians like Elliott Sharp, Arto Lindsay, John Zorn, Hugo Largo, David Linton, and lots more.

On Lumerians`s ‘Atlanta Brook’, I`m sure you`ll dig the cheesy Vasquez signature, this great vintage organ sound, the hypnotic grooves, and to the whole 70`s hippie psychedelic acidy atmosphere it puts you in. This 5 piece from Oakland sounds real good, and you should head over to the Knitting factory site, and grab a copy of ‘Transmalinnia’.
