Lofiles is a music and mp3 blog contains a collection of songs I love. MP3s are for sampling purposes only. If you like the music as much as I do, please go out and buy the records! The website's focus is mainly on indie music covering a wide array of genres: Alternative, alt folk, alt country, singer-songwriter, indie hip hop, funk & soul, experimental music and more.
I try to steer clear of any music on major record labels preferring to support independent labels and artists only.If you have a complaint about the ownership of a track, please contact me directly and I will be happy to take it down ASAP.

Screaming females

July 29th, 2010

I guess its because I am a guitar player at heart, I cant ignore the ‘healthy’ distorted grainy guitar sound, you know, the right amount of drive, distortion, saturation, a great guitar player, it just does it to me. That`s the case with Screaming females, , and I found myself listening to their whole myspace sequence with headphones on, time after time. All that, plus the Lofiles graphic touch.

Jojo Burger tempest

July 26th, 2010

Working For A Nuclear Free City formed around brothers Phil and Jon Kay and schoolfriend Gary McLure. Ed Hulme joined two days before the band’s first gig, cementing an unconventional line-up that doesn’t always have a singer, though Phil takes the majority of the vocals. Their new album is titled Jojo Burger Tempest. They explain: “We were making so many songs that we just started saving them on the comp under stupid names, and this was one of the song names. The album was almost called Mrs Fuzzlekins Rides Agai….

The indestructible beat of Soweto

July 23rd, 2010

This billboard I have photographed in Berlin has nothing to do with this compilation, its just that it made me think of this compilation I have bought on Emusic the other day: The indestructible beat of Soweto – a funky little instrumental, guitar and accordion, by Johnson Mkhalali. The guitar reminds me of those funk guitars of West African 70`s funk.

Won the Lotte ry

July 23rd, 2010

Brian (John Mitchell, Silber records) says he asked Anna Lynne to release a record for his label a day after he had heard her for the first time. No wonder, after listening to the first 30 seconds of Crush the bird, a gorgeous bare song – acoustic guitar and a pure vocal enhanced by a small room ambience. She releases it under the pseudonym Lotte Kestner, singing about relationships, love and loss of love tales, delivers it without the need to hindg behind production or sophisticated arrangements. Angelic voice and a guitar.

Mecha

July 23rd, 2010

We have been following this great little label, Silber records for quite some time. We got some new releases from those hard working guys, and the first we have heard, coming from Remora, a dark guitar noise bleep album titled Mecha, with a comics book attached, inspired by this original sounding project, written by this label chief Brian John Mitchell, illustrated by Johnny hoang. (Check out the sample above, illustrated by J.H with the Lofiles touch). We love the instrumental tracks off this album, like ‘Slip sky’, ‘March’, ‘Levestibule 500′ and the dark hypnotic ‘049′. Check out the opening track, ‘March’, although its electronic sound doesn’t represent the sound of the whole project. Seems like its going to be a Silbermedia weekend here.

Listen to  March

The entire Silbermedia catalog is available for $5 per release HERE.

Check out their QRD webzine with a series of guitarist interviews. 20 interviews in June, 21 in July, & a future set in August.

Pomegranates

July 17th, 2010

I have gotten this mail listing good news for this Ohio band, Pomegranates. Talking about their new record, ‘One of us’, which is being released by Afternoon records on October 14th. The band will tour this fall with Colour revolt starting September 15th, and will do a 2 CMJ gig on Oct 21st & 22nd. I have heard a song of theirs, Morroco girl, that I love, although, people write completely different tunes about girls from Morroco, where I come from.

The shadow of….

July 16th, 2010

Went to see DJ Shadow live the other night to bring you sights and sounds, but my Video camera`s memory card was brutally confiscated by his manager, so I got few stills off this great show, opening band, this all star Kutiman orchestra, all those Jewish local Afroheads playing Ala G Clinton, and DJ Shadow with a killlller set, unfortunately, all those great moments are still in His manager`s pocket (200$ card).

Now, I thought we are both on the same side of things (being that music fulfills such an large part of our lives), the only difference is that the guy is making a living off his music, and I don’t even make that. I am a non profit org, established to promote musicians that make great music, and don’t sell out, and need my promotion, or, so I thought. His music is NOT COMMERCIAL, and I never thought bringing his innovative music to few more homes will create such a fuss. But f… it, although I stood there for 4 hrs with a Spinal disc herniation. The big question is services who better. Do artists enjoy music blogs promotion and could use it for further exposure, or is it that music blogs take advantage of indie fame. And there is another scenario: The slight chance one wouldn’t exist if it wasn’t for the help and work of others. I believe everyone wants to make a living, but one could find better paying jobs than music business related jobs. I have seen this well known rock photographer, waiting for the fr…n bus after this concert. There are many musicians I know, that are doing what the do only for the music`s sake, and don’t COMPROMISE, a big word, maybe a cliché, but it is the truth. Cant blame Flying Lotus, or DJ Premier for selling out, no matter what. Every time I bump into a hurdle of that sort, I take it as a personal insult, as if someone stained my endless efforts, you know, a full time job with no pay.

So as you can see,  I am traumatized, and it really took all my positive energy away, and it`s a shame. Make no mistake though, and I am sure of that, one of us slept well the other night.

Mother`s basement

July 7th, 2010

Mother`s basement is a project started by three musicians from Florida, Richard Colado, Jeremiah Johnson, and Benjamin Cooper. The idea is to write compositions under very specific guidelines, to see how different artists would interpret the same agenda. They were given three assignments.

The first assignment was to use Beethoven`s piano concerto # 5 (Emperor) as the source for an original piece. One must use a phrase, a bassline or a chord progression of the original.

The 2nd assignment was to use the artists body as the sole sound source of the piece. One could use samplers or any kind of electronic software for editing, and the voice is allowed as an instrument, but no actual instruments.

The third was to write a piece for three acoustic guitars. Electric and effects are not allowed, and the goal was to remove production from the process, I mean, completely pure.

Woodsman

July 7th, 2010

For those of you who dont know these guys, although this is not the first time we write about them, Woodsman is an experimental ambient post-psychedelic band based in Denver, CO. The quartet contains two totemic percussionists and two sonic animators who employ electric guitars, feedback loops, and recorded samples to build the dreamy astral soundscapes that define Woodsman’s sound. Influenced by hazy mountain passes, the cinema of Stan Brakhage, and early 1970’s improvisational recordings by Miles Davis Woodsman has crafted aural offerings that are uniquely their own.

This is not Junk, this is culture

July 3rd, 2010

His music is quantized harder than we are used to listen to being that we live in the Flying lotus age, but it doesn’t mean he aint got heavy duty skills. His pseudonym says it all: Junk culture. We greet him and his ragged drum samples with a warm welcome:…” Junk Culture is a new project by Deepak Mantena on the Illegal Art label. The first Junk Culture EP, West Coast, was released in October 2009, with another EP to follow in the Fall of 2010. On West Coast, Deepak’s samples are all run through a handheld recorder that gives his constructions a gritty lo-fi loop-based sound, mixing fractured vocals, pop hooks, and an overall euphoric warmth.

Night Jewel

July 3rd, 2010

California native Ramona Gonzalez first began her transcendent minimalist dance-pop escapades in the privacy of her own home in Los Angeles. With the aid of her multitrack cassette recorder and whatever keyboards, drum machines, and other instruments that were available to her, she very quickly developed her own unique sound and began performing live in the L.A. area under the moniker Nite Jewel. Later teaming up with Cole M. Greif-Neill (formerly of Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti) and Corey Lee Granet, the Nite Jewel act became a three piece band, touring alongside the likes of Deerhunter, Massive Attack, Little Dragon, and DaM-FunK. In August 2010, Nite Jewel will independently release a six song EP titled Am I Real?, in collaboration with Cole M. Greif-Neill (formerly of Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti). Title track “Am I Real?” features a collaboration with Daniel and Andrew Aged from Teen Inc.

Nite Jewel  is also currently collaborating with DaM-FunK, among others, and working on her second album set for release in the winter of 2011. Listen to their new tracks
