USA tour, live album for Clare and the reasons

Minimal composers Terry Riley and Steve Reich were the inspiring force behind Austin-based group The Octopus Project venture Hexadecagon, debuted as a live performance and soon to be released in album form October 26, 2010 on Peek-A-Boo Records.

Using custom electronics (The Bend Matrix) and pushing existing software (Ableton Live, VDMX, OSCulator) to its limits, they arranged eight speakers in a circle around the audience, with the audience surrounding the band at the center, accompanied by eight synchronized video projections, designed by Austin digital artist Wiley Wiggins.

The Octopus Project performed Hexadecagon live twice to over-capacity crowds during SXSW 2010to emphatically positive reception. USA Today ranked the performance one of its top five shows of SXSW.

The band spent the next two months recording in their Austin home studio and mixing in Dallas withJohn Congleton (St. Vincent, Explosions In the Sky, Clinic, The Walkmen). Listen to Toneloop

Starting making her own music around 2001, Silje Nes began by recording on 4-track demo software through a tiny inbuilt microphone on her laptop. Though she’d previously studied classical piano, when she started recording, she did so with guitars and instruments she had no previous experience of playing. In this she was simply guided by the sounds she loved, and the excitement of discovering new instruments and sounds without learned conventions. Starting out by working purely instrumentally, she made use of whatever equipment she could get hold of – guitars and an old synth, a cello, a drum kit, a laptop, as well as loop pedals to build layers of her own playing. Little by little she also found ways of including her own voice in the mix, both as texture and song, and her music has organically evolved from there.

Jason Noble, a Louisville musician who was an member of math-punk crew Rodan, Shipping news & Rachel`s has a new project – a band called The Young Scamels. Young Scamels began in 2008 as part of a production of “The Tempest” at Actors Theatre in Louisville. The track is ‘Full fathom five’. Young Scamels are Noble on guitar, bass, drums, and keys along with two Rachel’s cohorts — Christian Frederickson on viola, piano, computer and Greg King doing vibes, percussion, and keys — with some guests.
