Can

June 15th, 2012

Spoon Records and Mute are delighted to announce the release of Can – The Lost Tapes, the long awaited box set of unreleased studio, soundtrack and live material.

The Lost Tapes, out on 18 June 2012, was curated by Irmin Schmidt and Daniel Miller, compiled by Irmin Schmidt and Jono Podmore, and edited by Jono Podmore.

When the legendary Can studio in Weilerswist was sold to the German Rock N Pop Museum, they bought everything, including the army mattresses that covered the walls for sound protection, and relocated it to Gronau.

Whilst dismantling the studio, master tapes were found and stored in the Spoon archive. With barely legible labeling, no one was sure what was on these until Irmin Schmidt and long time collaborator Jono Podmore started to go through over 30 hours of music.

The final cut of tracks, dating from 1968-1977, features studio material recorded at Schloss Nörvenich and Can Studio, Weilerswist with the Can line up of Holger Czukay on bass, Michael Karoli on guitars, Jaki Liebezeit on drums and Irmin Schmidt on keyboards, and on most tracks, vocals from Malcolm Mooney or Damo Suzuki.

Can was formed by ex-student of Stockhausen Irmin Schmidt, who, fired by the sounds of Jimi Hendrix and Frank Zappa abandoned his career in classic music to form a group which could utilise and transcend all boundaries of ethnic, electronic experimental and modern classical music.

It Hurts

October 2nd, 2011

Charles Hurts is a band from Belfast and they sound like a 50`s – 60`s type band, although I could swear the vocals are 80`s vocals. This song is real fun though, I found myself humming parts of it all day today. Check it out, ‘Like Glue’.

Its Klaus Von Barrel again

August 24th, 2011

It’s the second time we talk about Klaus Von Barre, the man behind The KVB, and recently Die Jungen . Inspired by the 50s and 60s and still sounds contemporary, something out of a David Lynch movie, or a track Nicolas Cage could cover afterwards in shown in a romantic scene . I really love this album ‘Just a dream’ out now and waiting for you on Bandcamp for a bargain price.

Cruel/Kind

July 21st, 2011

This is a track that stays with me for awhile, and I dedicate it to N. There is something about his performance, the 60`s feel, and the reverby voice, that makes me forget modern world troubles, such as mobile phones, Emails, SMS`s, car horns, the screwed up music in Kakao (my local coffeeshop/ office),  and makes me ease on the gas pedal, and all of a sudden I realize I don’t need to be the smartest, or innovative, or ground breaking, or simply unique, and I can just be another human, like in Buddhism,  just one of millions,  although could still have a voice of my own. And… no need to delete my words to death. Gold Leaves is a new project of Grant Olsen, half of Seattle folk duo Arthur & Yu. The singer/songwriter hooked up with ‘PapercutsJason Quever to produce this marvelous  album.

No subtitles

June 18th, 2011

Stefan Pedatella doesn’t need subtitles. It is not the first time we mention those Brooklyn boys, Translations, and the moment you`ll hear Pigeon Suit`s guitar riff, you would understand where they come from and after being introduced to previous tracks like ‘The wanderer’ and ‘Tarantella’, we could tell you where they are heading to. We love ‘Pigeon suit’ 60`s garage R&B rockish flavor and we look forward to be hearing a whole album cause this track sounds like a good old Stones song.
