Fear of Men

May 3rd, 2012

Just received a mail from FOM. Allthough might be little poppy for us, I really like it. Fear of Men return with the 7” ‘Green Sea’, released on London’s Sexbeat (Fresh & Only’s, No Joy, White Fence) on the 18th of June and limited to 300 copies. The single was recorded in a basement studio in Wandsworth in early 2012 and features a musical saw, backwards guitar solo and layers of backing vocals processed through a near dilapidated Echo Chamber. The band are touring the UK with Best Coast in June.

French for rabbits

March 18th, 2012

‘Claimed by the Sea’  by French for Rabbits is simply a lovely EP. All songs written by Brooke Singer from Sefton, New Zealand, with John Fitzgerald contributing some magic to tracks 3, 4 and 6. Usually I  like raspy hoarse vocals but Brooke’s voice is so pure and pleasant to listen to and the songs are great and simple, and made me rethink about those issues I have been dealing with lately, concerning reinventing the world. Meaning, this EP proves none of those important issues matter…this shit works

Calaca Strides

February 27th, 2012

I like the message I got from Calaca Strides:..” “I know you music bloggers get swamped in music, but if you find time to have a little listen to this it’d be much appreciated.. Calaca Strides”.. Actually, all I do is seek music like this all day long. So, you made my job easier and I will share this gorgeous lofi folkish acoustic somewhat psychedelic song with you guys..

Bathetic records are saying Ross Gentry is always in the studio, mastering the Villages craft. It shows when you listen to ‘Beach Pneumatic Transit’ from the cassette “The Spilling Past” on Bathetic Records.

We Love Mike Bruno

February 24th, 2012

This is not the first time we cover this Troubadour. I have been listening to Mike Bruno’s magical record again last night for couple of hours. Although it is just an acoustic and a voice, few of his songs leave you numb. The result is powerful, and you feel you’re in float in a different time zone. There are three absolute favorites off this wonderful recordings I wanna share with you. Mike Bruno is a singer-songwriter based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.. 2009 saw the release of the “The Sad Sisters” CD on his own imprint, Marygarden Tapes + Things.

Now signed to Texas-based record label Haute Magie, which gives a proper 12″ vinyl release to the same collection of songs.

The Alessandro Coronas Lofiles February Mixtape

February 19th, 2012

This is one of the most gorgeous mixtapes one could ask for. I have approached our beloved Alessandro Coronas whom we wrote about a month ago to curate a collection for us and we have received this beauty. On this freezing wintery day, I am sitting in my dark studio listening to this comp and, man, every track is a better treat than the previous one. I am ashamed to admit, I didnt recognize some of the names on the playlist. For those of you who never heard of Alessandro before here is a short bio in his own words:..”hey, I was born. …at the moment I do sound designing & composing for videogames, sound engineering, recording, performing, teaching music and inventing games during the day”…

And if you wanna purchase his gorgeous music, HERE you are.

One Body

January 7th, 2012

Sons of an Illustrious Father second full-length album, ‘One Body’, was released on November 9th, 2011, and is available now on their Bandcamp. SOAIF is a five-piece band from the Hudson Valley. There are combining traditional folk, blues, country, and early gospel forms with punkish raw drive and performance, distinctly American. Love the album’s opener.

James Jackson Toth

January 5th, 2012

About Golden Calves – Collection gathers pre-Wooden Wand and the Vanishing Voice material from James Jackson Toth‘s Golden Calves project. Originally released in 1996; reissue is limited to 1000 copies.

“It was really all about The Godz, Jandek, The Shadow Ring, Strapping Fieldhands, Swell Maps and Tower Recordings. Beyond these, I had only heard the ‘classic’ and most available free jazz, krautrock and noise albums. I was a long way from, say, the second Comus album or Charles Gayle. But this music changed my life. It was a record store owner named Eric McCarthy and a man who needs no introduction to anyone reading these notes, Matt Valentine, who taught me that there was a world beyond Dischord, Vermiform and Ebullition. I went to college, met hip people, and got a job at both the local record store and the college radio station. I was taking drugs. I bought a four track and began emulating my heroes. I called the project Golden Calves. I was eighteen years old….

In hindsight, I like to think that the noise scene liked us and responded so positively to us because, in our own naïve way, we were subverting a very rigid paradigm. Touring with noise bands and moving in experimental circles but playing proper ‘songs’ is what made us weird. It was an exciting, unforgettable time.

These are not perfect records. Perhaps worse than so-called ‘naïve art’ is ‘only-marginally-informed art’ and that’s what this is. I should have let my talents marinate for a while before rushing out records that now sound to me like thinly-veiled love letters to Siltbreeze. But fuck it, man. I was hopelessly arrogant then and remain so today. Why else would I greenlight this fucking thing?”
