Cannon blue

October 13th, 2011

Though technically residing in Nashville, TN, rising singer-songwriter Daniel James aka Canon Blue has spent the majority of the past three years touring the world with Efterklang while simultaneously writing and recording Rumspringa in their Copenhagen studio. He then headed to Iceland to record orchestral arrangements with renowned string quartet Amiina (most famously recognized as Sigur Ros‘s string section).

Purchase a copy of the gorgeous album here.

Ass

October 10th, 2011

Ex Punk rocker and instrumentalist Andreas Söderström has been making music as a solo artist under the name Ass for quite some time now. This is just a brief example and an appetizer from Andreas and Headspin recordings for those of you who have never heard his acoustic music.

About a year ago we brought to you Rachel Grimes’s (a gifted composer and pianist and much loved and appreciated here) score for the 1938 silent film “Our Day” by Wallace Kelly of Lebanon, Kentucky. Now we have received a newly recorded score (oboe, clarinet, strings, harp and piano) which you could purchase  HERE and some tour dates. Try to catch her if she passes through a town near you…

Puzzled

October 9th, 2011

Not quite our day to day lofi harsh attitude and real poppy if you compare it to latest posts, but we couldn’t ignore those nice guys (from the great city of Reykjavik, a city we promised ourselves we would visit real soon) of this Icelandic label, Bedroom community, a record label/collective formed in 2006 by Valgeir Sigurðsson, with Nico Muhly and Ben Frost, who are using their incredible Greenhouse studio for their recording projects (check out the photo ). One of their artists is Puzzle Muteson, ,the alter ego of an songwriter from the Isle of Wight, with an incredible Tenor voice and real cool finger picking style. I couldn’t resist the sound of the first track from ‘En Garde’, his Bedroom community release, Arranged and produced by collaborators and labelmates Nico Muhly and Valgeir Sigurðsson. Real pretty songs, and I am back in my coffee shop, while ‘A tightrope dance’ and ‘En Garde’ are playing repeatedly on my invaluable Macbook. Buy the album HERE

Heartwarming

October 4th, 2011

Another pleasant surprise from The hardest working dude in the business, Erik David Hidde and his Housewarming records, with 2 new beautiful tracks from Jamie Isaac and Great view of the moon, both acoustic, and touching.

Lo Fi club

October 2nd, 2011

I forgot to mention that I have heard the Charles Hurts song on a Canadian compilation, Lo Fi Club compilation # 2, which you could download for free HERE (all 24 songs). Another artist that I really dig of this compilation is Jonathan C Judd, Check out this nice little tune.

Oliveray

October 2nd, 2011

Oliveray consists of Peter Ray Broderick and musician/producer Nils Oliver Frahm. Without much preconception they just set up the mics and started recording, with an aim to create a short album of half instrumentals, half vocal-based songs. They ran through a few fresh musical ideas that each of them had, improvising along with each other, sometimes just improvising entirely, and before they knew it they had a nice little collection of eight intimate pieces of music.. Here comes oliveray!

Barlande

August 25th, 2011

Barlande, the new album by 73 years old father and 28 years old son Pedro Soler and Gaspar Claus, an album which showcases an ancient way of playing flamenco guitar with a futuristic approach to cello, a father and son’s collaboration. Barlande was produced by Bryce Dessner, guitarist with The National. The band played in 2006 at the Guitares au Palais festival in the south of France, whose music director is Pedro Soler. Dessner, who studied classical guitar at Yale and co-founded the chamber ensemble Clogs, recorded Barlande at The National’s studio in Brooklyn. (NPR) Listen to its closing track featuring Bryce Dessner and Sufjan Stevens as well. Barlande is out August 30th on Infinite.

Mieux

August 22nd, 2011

Stray Kites sophomore album, ‘Mieux‘, entirely self recorded at Max’s house in Ashburn, VA with a homemade 4track was released a month ago. Stray kites are Max Detrich and Junior Roseboro. In their own words, this record marks a bit of change in musical direction stemming from their first LP (“One Day, Earth Time“, 2010) …”At times these new songs can be esoterically cynical and emotive; never arduous, but always contextually layered. At heart we’d like for this to be a sophisticated and intimate, but above all sincere, indie folk/pop record”….. It really sounds like they had a ball making this lofi gem, and if you like The Dodos, I know you`re gonna dig this.
