We won`t Forget

August 19th, 2011

Oupa (the solo project of Daniel Blumberg of the UK band Yuck) released its debut album,Forget, on Aug. 16 on Fat Possum in the US and in the UK on Blumberg‘s newly launched label, Boiled Egg, on Aug. 15. Forget was recorded in Daniel’s flat in January of this year. The album will be limited to cassette and digital formats only.

A limited edition book of Daniel’s drawings made during the creation of Forget was released on the same day.

you can stream the whole album on the Oupa BandCamp page.

This is a collection of naive sounding ballads, simply and sparsely crafted, beautiful acoustic tunes. I used to love straight in your face dry vocals, but on this instance, it would have made this record maybe too intimate and the reverb use is perfect. This is my favorite Blumberg recording so far and I really dig the sketches as well. So we urge you to go and stream and purchase this album Here. Watch the clip for ‘Windows’

Meadow Rituals

August 1st, 2011

We were thrilled to receive the new Luup album from our dear friend Stelios Romaliadis, an album titled “Meadow Rituals” (out on cd/lp by Experimedia). This is a gorgeous album and contains 8 originals and 8 remixes and a cover. We have chosen the cover, an Aaron Martin track, ‘Spiraling‘. The art is on the house as usual, and this is just taste. There is so much more on this incredible record, and we promise to bring you more from project real real soon.

Cruel/Kind

July 21st, 2011

This is a track that stays with me for awhile, and I dedicate it to N. There is something about his performance, the 60`s feel, and the reverby voice, that makes me forget modern world troubles, such as mobile phones, Emails, SMS`s, car horns, the screwed up music in Kakao (my local coffeeshop/ office),  and makes me ease on the gas pedal, and all of a sudden I realize I don’t need to be the smartest, or innovative, or ground breaking, or simply unique, and I can just be another human, like in Buddhism,  just one of millions,  although could still have a voice of my own. And… no need to delete my words to death. Gold Leaves is a new project of Grant Olsen, half of Seattle folk duo Arthur & Yu. The singer/songwriter hooked up with ‘PapercutsJason Quever to produce this marvelous  album.

Carden Plains

July 20th, 2011

Jacob Faurholt is a trustworthy dude. We simply trust his taste in music. He introduced us to a friend and collaborator, Soren Brothers, a Canadian musician whom he met a couple of years ago in Montreal, and had moved to Berlin around the same time he did. That’s about the only thing we could tell you about SB, but I guess his music speaks for itself. Listen to ‘Carden Plains‘ by ‘Man meets bear’, SB`s psuedonimon.

Whistle peak

July 18th, 2011

One of those days when you got to set things in motion and be in control, take decisions, and solve problems again. You got to find the extra strength within your fragile self, but then your body lets you down. Too bad…All you can do is lay back, take a long deep breath, remember the days 5 shots of Vodka did the job for ya and find a decent substitute….. Shut you bedroom door, dim the lights, put on your groovy headphones, listen to Whistle Peak, and let them take over… Something about their dry acoustic sound, sloppy beats, the fact they don’t take themselves too seriously and those wonderful tiny gems they make,  eases the pain tonite. Loved their brave cover of Bowie`s Lady Stardust, I mean, anyone who dares covering The White Duke and gets away with it, gets our respect.. Head over to their Soundcloud page and enjoy ‘Louisville is for lovers series’ and ‘Whistle Peak’ as much as I do right now.

Directionless? Not

July 3rd, 2011

Today was one of those days you just wanna hide in an air conditioned cell or regret you were not born in an igloo. I was sitting outside at this coffee shop mumbling a special mantra to forget I was actually dripping while large stains of sweat appear on my thin summer shirt, as I realized middle eastern summer has fully and shamelessly arrived and so did his regular companions, horrible humidity, sweat, mosquitos, heavy unpleasant urban smells. I have brought my camera with me while realizing strong colors are fading and turning dull, so I tried to end this miserable brunch as quickly as I could and ran back to my air conditioned bedroom to chill with this new album I have received from Jacob Faurholt, a former educated teacher, and a very talented musician at present. The first sounds from this Callahan/ Bonnie Prince Billy school of songwriting, turned my summer sweat to goose bumps. I usually try to escape my own Dark hours, but I guess writing an album like this and confronting troubling issues could be as fruitful and therapeutic as going through psychoanalysis. This is a brave album to make and while its not for everyone those of you who are willing to walk the extra mile, do that and you`ll thank me.

Amongst my favorites on this dark and beautiful record are ‘Directionless’, ‘Dark hours’, ‘Themes of a troubled mind’, ‘The hoax’, ‘Creatures in the sea’, and ‘Untitled’.

In January 2010 Faurholt has moved from his Danish hometown Aarhus to Berlin, to pursue his musical career. Faurholt has supported bands like CocoRosie, The Black Heart Procession, The Handsome Family, Grizzly Bear, and fellow Danes Efterklang. His new album , ‘Dark hours’, out August 15th on Raw onion records, features guest appearances by our beloved Soley from the Icelandic group Seabear and Nona Marie Invie from American band Dark Dark Dark, and experimental musician Marc Kellaway, who got creative freedom to make further recordings and eventually to mix the album…

In the woods of Virginia

May 30th, 2011

…”In the woods of Virginia a different age is held, if you walk long enough past the busy highways- if you leave your back door- you can find remnants of this age. The seemingly prehistoric foundation of the South that appears no different from the earth it rests on. Though the Suburbs have taken their claim in this landscape the past refuses to die and on those hot summer evenings I walk with it’s ghosts. We sing songs about the celebration of life in the face of death- for that is what they have taught me and I sing them songs of Man’s passion. At the abandoned house down past the barbecue joint, thats where we meet. If you would like to join us – Welcome In”…MH. Head over to Bandcamp and purchase this magical haunted lofi Americana folkish album by Meeting house from The Champe Ford recording company.
