High on Lowlandssss

May 8th, 2011

A Scott Walker, the lead singer for the Walker brothers  ’30 century man’  brilliant cover by Lowlandssss from Wellington,  New Zeland – have no idea who this is, just stumbled upon his Soundcloud page while searching for gems. This is one of those rare instances where the cover is better than the original..

Miramore

April 22nd, 2011

Mirah Yom Tov Zeitlyn sounds as sweet and beautiful as she looks in this photo. I have been listening to her music for quite some time now, paying close attention to her songwriting skills and performance, and while doing so, I have built a whole personality around this new extremely talented acquaintance of mine, and this photo seems perfect to the way I have envisioned her. This is a song I really love, although this is not a new release, it came out during 2009.

Midi and the Modern Dance

April 21st, 2011

Received this mail from CT;…” I’m a student at Wesleyan University, and just wanted to give you guys a heads up about some really great CT bands that I’ve stumbled upon recently”…We are always on the search for new material and the first song blew us away. This song is by Omeed Goodarzi with his band ‘Midi and the Modern Dance’. I know nothing about this guy but I love what Hannah wrote about him..” I first heard Midi and the Modern Dance in 2007 when they were in 10th grade and had just released their first EP. A friend of mine had gone to a guitar camp with Omeed Goodarzi, the lead singer and founder of Midi, and rushed back after the summer was over to tell me about him. To me, Midi and the Modern Dance sounds like being 16. Iit’s an exquisite amalgamation of primal, adolescent angst and desperation that somehow manages to avoid amateurish pretension. This is music to blast in your car after your girlfriend rips your heart out or -even worse- after you’ve realized that the guy you’re pining over doesn’t even know you exist. Their live shows, believe it or not, are even better than their recordings- hot and sweaty and perfect. The band is currently scattered between colleges in various states but if they get enough buzz they might take some time off to tour properly’….Hannah Baker

Natureboy

April 9th, 2011

Natureboy is the musical project of Sara Kermanshahi, a first generation American of Iranian descent. Along with long time collaborator/producer Cedar Apffel and joined by Rory O’Connor (Masterface) on drums and keyboards, Natureboy recorded their self-titled debut which received its official release on Own records in July 2010. Natureboy makes different kind of acoustic folk, dreamy and haunting, by using a perfect blend of Sara`s vocals, backgrounds, pads and electric & acoustic guitars.

…and She sounds as good as she looks. Believe it or not.

It`s been since Julian Lynch has moved to Madison, where he had been studying for a Master’s program in Ethnomusicology and recorded and released three CD-R’s under his given name: Born2Run, Birthday and Garden is Adventure, that he had been developing this heavily ethno acoustic influenced recognizable style of his. In 2009 and 2010, Olde English  Spelling Bee released two LPs by Julian Lynch, Orange You Glad and Mare, respectively. Julian continues to live and record in Madison, where he is currently enrolled in a joint PhD program in Ethnomusicology and Anthropology.
