Songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Tara Jane ONeil creates melodic and experimental music under her own name and in collaboration with other artists, musicians, and filmmakers. Her work innately crosses genres and boundaries—ranging from melodic songcraft melded with experimental noise, live performances ( solo songing to large ensemble improvisation) to dance, film and theater scores.

Her musical life started at the tender age of 19 as the bass player for the art-punk ensemble Rodan in her hometown of Louisville, Kentucky. During the 1990’s, she had collaborated with many other groups. In New York City, she recorded her first solo album, ‘Peregrine’, in the bathtub of her Ludlow Street apartment; its 2000 release on Quarterstick Records marked the start of a series of and beautiful solo releases, most recently A Ways Away ( K records 2010).

She has lived in the Pacific Northwest since 2003. While writing her own music, ONeil has also collaborated with Papa M, Mount Eerie, Ida, Mirah, Michael Hurley, Jackie-O Motherfucker, and the King Cobra, among others; she founded the Ecstatic Tambourine Orchestra. She has scored soundtracks for film and theater; and composed experimental performances for large ensembles. ONeil is also an accomplished visual artist whose paintings and drawings have exhibited worldwide, and appeared on several record covers and in numerous publications; Two books of her artwork have been published, ‘Who Takes A Feather’ (Map Press, Japan, 2003) and ‘Wings. Strings. Meridians: A Blighted Bestiary’ (Yeti, 2007.)

Here’s TJO`s upcoming full-length collaboration with Japanese vocalist Nikaido Kazumi, entitled “Ruh Roh”, that will be released May 2011 on K Records. She is currently working on a collection of instrumental work, and a new book of drawings for Publication Studios.

Paste Magazine just announced Jesse Coppenbarger  (Colour Revolt)  new solo record under the El Obo moniker, ‘Oxford Basement Collection is out May 10. This debut album is released as a deluxe vinyl edition (limited to 1,000 copies on blue vinyl) that also contains a copy of the album (with 3 bonus tracks) on CD enclosed in the LP jacket. This is a songwriter to watch, and a great album, recorded with the assistance of former Fletcher bandmate Steven Bevilaqua to fill in gaps/holes and pull the sound together.

Wide awake

February 24th, 2011

‘Wide awake’ by Arches: “This is a concept album about a character who lives alone in a city. Mundane routines drive the character to flee the city and become a drifter. The character’s perspective of reality becomes convoluted with memories and current travels to the point where the character becomes unable to decipher past and present experiences”. For some reason it takes me back to The Antlers last album, ‘Hospice‘, which is another great concept album, and Arches succeeded in creating the same strong environment. Could be real hard to to tell a touching and honest story these days, but these guys do.

When you listen to Woom, you think of pop contemporaries that have completely changed the sound of indie music like Animal Collective, Tune-Yards, and Micachu and the Shapes. Woom generates music that is timeless as it is strange and new.

‘Muu’s Way’, out this summer on Ba Da Bing, showcases the fruits of Eben Portnoy and Sara Magenheimer’s 6-year collaboration. Beneath its incredibly detailed DIY production brims a wild, uncontainable energy. Skittering beats, deep-diving bass, crumbling guitars and crackling voices swarm around exceptionally unique pieces.

This is the last of four video loops based on the seasons commissioned by the Berkeley Art Museum. This one is Winter and was screened in conjunction with the exhibition, Flowers of the Four Seasons: Ten Centuries of Art from the Clark Center for Japanese Art and Culture, and curated by Tomo Yasuda.

If you like Fever Ray, Cat Power, or Shilpa Ray, I am sure you`ll appreciate the sound of Teen, Kristina Lieberson`s (from Here we go magic) new side project. Sparse, haunting and hypnotic, and we feel the sweet sensation  we experience when we discover a new meaningful piece of art. Listen to Teen`s demo, Cannibal.

The Dodos are back

February 2nd, 2011

The Dodos have been one of my favorite bands for awhile. Those broken rhythms, those unique guitar tunings, unusual vocal melodies. So original, and now with a new song from No Color, “Black night“.
