Against A Simple Wooden Cross

July 22nd, 2012

I can really relate to Fraser McGowan’s story right now, and I know some of you will get my drift.

The absolutely wonderful ‘Against A Simple Wooden Cross’ was born after Scottish based artist Fraser McGowan (AKA Caught In The Wake Forever) had suffered a complete mental breakdown last year, following a life-long battle with chronic anxiety. He had to give up his job and eventually his girlfriend and son moved out, leaving him to face his struggles alone.

Naturally, he felt destroyed but the one thing he had was extra time on his hands, which he had not been used to before. Previously, his work with music had been a very slow process but suddenly, the one thing he had left was a seemingly infinite amount of time in which to work carefully and unhurried. For six months, Fraser immersed himself in this album and poured everything that he had left into it. At the start of the project he had absolutely no confidence left in himself and as the music began to take shape, he began to tread the road to recovery.

Against A Simple Wooden Cross is an honest account from an artist who was literally starting life again, completely on his own terms for the first time.

This great album is out now on Hibernate. All profits from the album will go to Crisis Counselling established in 1996 to significantly reduce the barriers and exclusion in mental health care. PURCHASE THE ALBUM HERE

Top, Top, Top Girls

July 21st, 2012

There is nothing I like more than ragged, hard, dirty beats. When I hear a distorted heavy takes all the mix’s space kick in a track, it seems like the rest is just luxury. That’s the case with this awesome debut by Top Girls aka Evan Adams. This is a rough, much harder version of PM Dawn. It’s the dreamy harmonies that really made me think of this duo, but there is a crucial balance between the sweet lush R&B and the rough beats that put it in a different league altogether. This is an important album, and I will share it with you right away so I could just put my headphones on and drift away while listening to this awesome record, ‘Carolina’.

Duece

July 19th, 2012

I have been scrolling through recent posts and realized that Lofiles has really turned out to be the soundtrack of my life, live, in real time. It seems like I am constantly searching for tone, or sound, for those scenes and sights of life, my existence. While going back in time, I have been observing, like a bystander, as if spying on someone else’s life, smelling the scent of turbulence, a spectator to the relentless pursuit, feeling all those uncovered sensations, and tasting the sadness, happiness, pain, loneliness and love, sensing the fear. Despite of the fact this journey has turned out to be extremely personal, and intimate, I am very pleased to share it with you…..and almost forgot..this track too

Memoir

July 15th, 2012

I am in a nostalgic 80’s mood today. After sharing with you an 80’s sounding Malka Spigel track earlier tonight, I have received this real fun track by a band called Goodbye Labrador, titled Memoir, featuring tasteful guitars riffs and vocals that reminds me of Bernard Sumner (of the New Order and Electronic hall of fame). After a quite hectic and exhausting day, I have played Memoir a few times, and forgot…

Phone Call – The Alessandro Coronas Lofiles mixtape

July 12th, 2012

Our dear friend and ultra talented musician Alessandro Coronas has hit us again with such a unique project, a different kind of mixtape. The idea behind it is to bring it to you as a whole, with a story behind, or just to create a certain feel, vibe, or state of mind. As Alessandro explained it to me; …”it’s called “phone call”. To recap the idea is to have a story that sneaks underneath every mixtape .. few words. now it’s about a girl who makes a phone call in russia. You don’t know who’s on the other side of the line”.. Now, there are some great artists that participate on this mixtape, but there is a wider idea behind it; When you listen to this mixtape you don’t really care for the small detail, it’s the beautiful dreamy overall sound and mood of it, that just carries you far far away, to the trip AC took you to.

River

June 18th, 2012

Barbara Kinzle and Birch Cooper, the Portland, Oregon duo, The Slaves, only have a handful of releases under their belt so far, but they have learnt how to fit real well within each other’s movements, piling on in all the right places and knowing when to pull back. Their formula is simple: guitar, synth, voice. The Slaves debut “River” off forthcoming Spirits of the Sun LP out on Digitalis this July.
