This collection of songs has been curated out of the 300 artists and tracks we have covered throughout the year. This has been more or less my iPod’s most abused playlist, and the magical number that we have come up with, are those songs that have accompanied us for the longest time. Those of you that will dig deeper, will realize that our heart belongs to lofi minimalistic bedroom music and we are always on the search for musicians that succeed in making inspiring music within the limitations of their homes or bedroom and despite of the fact they had no budget . SONG ORDER IS PRETTY MUCH MEANINGLESS, allthough we have placed the artists you are most likely to know at the top spots.

We wish you a Merry Christmas, a Happy Chanukah, a Joyous Kwanzaa, and a Happy New Year…and we hope next year will be as inspiring and rewarding as this one.

‘The Gaudi side of town’ is one of these tracks that make me go and say: f… man, this is something I could and should have done, it`s so simple and familiar, and yet, as always, you are not the one to be credited with the rights. ..” When Ryan Olson decided to make a record with Solid Gold members Zack Coulter and Adam Hurlburt, it was clear to them what the result would be: a collection of drugged-up keyboards and slick bedroom production almost exclusively inspired by 10cc’s “I’m Not In Love.” To be fair, they weren’t entirely off. What they didn’t know was that it would spiral into a project of epic proportions, enlisting the talents of over 25 musicians from various scenes around the country, relocating the base of operations from Olson’s Minneapolis bedroom/studio to the Wisconsin-based studio April Base, and the genesis of a musical super-family, GAYNGS.

From the moment anyone heard Olson, Coulter, and Hurlburt’s rough version of their first composition “The Gaudy Side of Town”, they wanted in on it”…..

A Boom Bap continuum

January 6th, 2010

(For those of you who don’t know what Boom Bap is, that is what our dictionary says:

Boom Bap – A style of hip hop signified by a hard bass drum and snapping snare that is often EQed to the forefront of the beat. Some examples include the album “Return of the Boom-bap” by Krs-One, the Duck Down record label.

Boom Bap – boom bap is the roots of hip hop, it’s the real type shit. boom bap refers to the sound of those hardcore drums you find in roots hip hop tracks. ” boom bap////boom bap////boom boom bap////ba boom boom bap”

Boom Bap – Describes the bass drum pattern in the real, oldschool hip-hop tracks. MC Shan – The Bridge listen to this song and you’ll get it…’ boom, bap boomboomboom bap boom boom, bap boomboomboom bap’…

The players: Jim 2tall, a DJ/producer from London. Laurent Fintoni (AKA Kper), a music journalist and lover and a DJ. DJ Clockwork, a mixtape fanatic and a talented graphic artist.

The masterplan: To do a retrospective mix of what they consider to be the evolution of a sound aesthetic ( they consider boom bap as a sound aesthetic, not a musical genre)

The result: Together they had made the ultimate mixtape of the decade, titled ‘A boom bap continuum’ (You could read more in the attached article about the ‘return of the boom bap’) .

As 2tall describes the initiative of the project:…” My intention is to highlight the lineage of hip hop production & beat making from the turn of the millennium to the present day”…. He calls the era, the ‘post Dilla’ era, and its mostly about crate digging, from the late 90`s up till now.

Kper, who is the man of words out of the three, is talking about the process of making this mixtape, and how it came about: To read the full story

Andrew Jernigan, the St. Louis producer better known as Phaseone, that did remix work for artists like Burial, Panda bear, Bloc party and many others, with a new LP titled “Thanks but no thanks”. We love the minimal dark approach and the tight beats . This kid got tons of talent. This one sounds like a laidback cover of” Autumn leaves ” by Nick Warren we have heard, a song that had appeared on the wonderful series’ Back to mine”.
