I have just heard a Django Reinhardt track, and remembered having heard those 2 local artists playing at a radio station in Tel Aviv, one band is Swing De Gitanes, and they are on a Django Reinhardt successors mission, 2 classical guitars and upright bass, and the other one is violinist Mirel Reznik, a Klezmer Gipsy master, playing a violin guitar swinging piece. This is the actual broadcast session.
Recorded these guys last week during a radio show, I love these guys, Swing De Gitanes, great Gypsy music. 2 Acoustic guitars and upright bass, 3 inexpensive mics did the job. Django reinhardt is the fuel to their existence and they say that if u dig what they do you should visit The Rosenbar trio site and you could listen to their great music and a special treat for Django`s 100 birthday.
Gogol Bordello tore the place down, brought the roof down, with a nasty hardcore punk gypsy klezmer folk metal, no bullshit set, the whole house was shaking. This was one of the best sets I have seen in Barbie, Tel Aviv. Boom Pam were opening and I thought they kicked a… till these guys hit the stage. These are some images from this magical night, and later on video clips, hopefully we have succeeded to capture part of last night`s mayhem for you.
This collaboration of Guignol & Mischief Brew is being released these days on Fistolo records. This is a beautiful mish mash of folk, punk, rock, klezmer, gypsy music and jazz.
“Flight dirty” contains seven Mischief Brew songs with Guignol as backing band, six Guignol songs with Erik on guitar, a Django Reinhardt cover, and an Iron Maiden cover.
Guignol is led by Franz Nicolay ( The hold steady), Peter Hess (Balkan beat box), George Rush (Hem), John Bollinger (Antony and the Johnsons).
MISCHIEF BREW`s music falls somewhere between the categories of pirate punk, Celtic folk, gypsy swing, devilish jazz, American olde-tyme and country.
Recorded at Vibromonk Studios with Danny Shatzky (Firewater, Balkan Beat Box, Gogol Bordello), GUIGNOL & MISCHIEF BREW’S Fight Dirty collaboration is a fascinating record, so versatile, and whether you are a jazz, pop, folk, gypsy music fan, you should own this one.
Kalman Balogh is one of the foremost Hungarian cimbalom players, descending from a famous dynasty of Hungarian Gipsy musicians. His virtuosity is matched by his understanding and respect of his heritage. A graduate of Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music of Budapest, he has completed many successful tours throughout the world with various ensembles. His instrument, the so-called cimbalom, is a sort of oversized hammer dulcimer played with mallets like a vibraphone, possesses piano like percussive abilities to drive a band rhythmically or take the melodic lead. In Balogh Kálmán’s expert hands, the cimbalom can do both simultaneously. Balogh continues a fabled European music tradition harking back to the collaboration of masters like gipsy guitarist Django Reinhardt and violinist Stephane Grappelli, connecting ancient folk music traditions of Central and Eastern Europe with the chord progressions and swing of jazz.
