Sometimes, when you listen to so much new music and artists everyday like we do, you get real tired. You know, trying to discover a leader, someone that sounds unique, like no one else..Its not that I am looking for the next inventor of the wheel, but its nice to hear truly inspiring music or artist. Besides, there are so many great bands out there, which makes it real hard to make a difference. 6 months ago, I have written about a seriously nasty MF, Joel Robert Melton, Who I have discovered while he had won the respectable 2nd spot on the yearly Bandcamp Hunter countdown. I was struck by the originality, by the power of his music, the awesome guitars…The whole thing made me want to go back to my druggie days, smoke a joint or two or ten, lay down, put on headphones, and drift away, to a place where you are able to think again, be creative, and most importantly, feel. Couple of weeks ago when JRM wrote to me telling me about a new track he was completing, I was kinda hesitant, not sure how I should react if the track would not meet the high standards he had created half a year earlier. I got the track ‘Peace Lilly’ (which is the title of a future EP)2 days ago and to tell you the truth…I cant stop listening to it ever since. First of all, this psychedelic piece makes me want to use whatever he is on…Secondly, his guitars, kill me. This beautiful song, is not arranged like your typical verse chorus verse chorus type arrangement. There are 2 hypnotic parts that grow on you from the very first listen. Although real hazy and cloudy, you could tell it is carefully crafted, sounding just the way great music should be made. I am honored to premiere this track and this artist and we really thank him for the inspiration….
Germany’s Ghostandthesong has been crafting off-kilter experimental pop with crispy production for a bit in the underground. On this release, he stretches out of the pop genre for the most part, exploring tape manipulation, drone, experimental and free jazz. It is a far out listening experience and contrasts nicely with POTIONS more low key, drone and groove experience.
Those brothers enjoy this marvelous mayhem they create, this funky mishmash of groove, psych, tone and sound, and they keep surprise you with changes, breaks, riffs, harmonies, and they sound like the misbehaved brother of Animal collective. Andy & Edwin White with their untamed impala. Enjoy Tonstartssbandht as much as I Do and buy their stuff from Arbutus records. (Photo by Hannah Davis)
‘Ghostandthesong’ is Matthias Kanik’s homerecording project released with a split together with Chris Rehm on Dayvan Zombear’s new label DZ tapes. MK is based in Berlin. Trying to put together a live show now experimenting jamming with different musicians, making some acidy psychedelic bluesy neo-surrealistic punkish rock music, some Sun Araw type of environment. Watch out for this brilliant musician cause underneath the hazy screen , he really has something to say. Buy his music HERE
Certain artists and tracks I have reviewed in the past few months have touched me in a different way and stay with me for a long while ( It doesn’t mean others dont). I have decided to make this fall compilation for those of you who slept on those tracks or never heard them. This mix will be available for streaming only here (Lofiles) and on Soundcloud.
This is a nasty combination: Groove, melody, musical parts and psychedlia. Peaking lights are more than a Dub groove oriented band. Their basics might come from classic dub, but their tone is so rich and hazy, and hypnotizes you. Listening to the fifth track on 936, Hey sparrow, makes me forget everything I wanted to leave behind. Plus watch this great video of that same album, ‘All the sun that shines’. 936 is out on Not not fun.
We are aware Record store dayis celebrated on the 16th of April , but we believe you should buy them records all year long plus that`s our small contribution, we have designed a poster for the ETSY artist community record store day poster so here you are…AND BUY THEM RECORDS AT ONE OF THOSE OLD SCHOOL RECORD STORE located near you THAT HAS BEEN THERE FOR AGES..Like Kimber`s Stinkweeds for example..
Psychedelic Horseshit are a gloriously messy band rooted in lo-fipunk experimentation, allthough they’ve kept a step ahead of the lo-fi scene by inventing a new sub genre they have christened ‘shitgaze’. Hailing from Colombus, Ohio, the Rust Belt capital MTV described as “ground zero for lo-fi punk, They began using a bunch of battered equipment, recording to four-track cassette, with a cardboard box for a bass drum and junkshop guitars and keyboards. All of a sudden, via a joke reference on their myspace page, ‘shitgaze‘ (the lo-fi genre-term they coined in satire of the early-’90s British shoegaze phenomenon) blew up and found them getting interviewed by MTV as well as being written up everywhere from Spin to NME. In 2010, a limited edition cassette, ‘Acid Tape’ signalled a move towards something more dazed and liquified, increasingly electronic.Signing to FatCat in late 2010, Psychedelic Horseshit‘s debut album for the label, ‘Laced‘, is due out in May 2011. ‘Puff’, the first track of ‘Laced‘, has inspired me to create this graphic scribble, and glued me to my tiny headphones for the last couple of hours or so…
