Geek love is the best love

November 19th, 2012

I am so tired. Was sick all day long and didn’t get my daily doze of love today. Tough. Seriously. I was real happy to find a copy of our dear friend Jacob Faurholt new EP titled ‘Geek love is the best love’ in my mailbox. Jacob would remind you of singer/songwriters in the vein of Bonnie Prince Billy, maybe a softer Lou Reed, with a slight melodic Bill Callahan resemblance. I was listening to this record and my favorite off this EP ‘Hiding in the shadows’ few times in a row now and it really brought different perspective to this fucked up day. Its not the first time we discuss Emily Wells here, but this time you are in for a big surprise. She has reached the Premiere league now with this extraordinary song of hers, ‘Passanger‘, and that could be just what she needed as a NYC newcomer. Watch out For Emily and Dark Dark Dark ( the Minneapolis folk band ) down at the Knitting Factory on October 12th.

Midi and the Modern Dance

April 21st, 2011

Received this mail from CT;…” I’m a student at Wesleyan University, and just wanted to give you guys a heads up about some really great CT bands that I’ve stumbled upon recently”…We are always on the search for new material and the first song blew us away. This song is by Omeed Goodarzi with his band ‘Midi and the Modern Dance’. I know nothing about this guy but I love what Hannah wrote about him..” I first heard Midi and the Modern Dance in 2007 when they were in 10th grade and had just released their first EP. A friend of mine had gone to a guitar camp with Omeed Goodarzi, the lead singer and founder of Midi, and rushed back after the summer was over to tell me about him. To me, Midi and the Modern Dance sounds like being 16. Iit’s an exquisite amalgamation of primal, adolescent angst and desperation that somehow manages to avoid amateurish pretension. This is music to blast in your car after your girlfriend rips your heart out or -even worse- after you’ve realized that the guy you’re pining over doesn’t even know you exist. Their live shows, believe it or not, are even better than their recordings- hot and sweaty and perfect. The band is currently scattered between colleges in various states but if they get enough buzz they might take some time off to tour properly’….Hannah Baker

El Obo

April 12th, 2011

Paste Magazine just announced Jesse Coppenbarger  (Colour Revolt)  new solo record under the El Obo moniker, ‘Oxford Basement Collection is out May 10. This debut album is released as a deluxe vinyl edition (limited to 1,000 copies on blue vinyl) that also contains a copy of the album (with 3 bonus tracks) on CD enclosed in the LP jacket. Download the first single, and pre-order here. This is a songwriter to watch, and a great album, recorded with the assistance of former Fletcher bandmate Steven Bevilaqua to fill in gaps/holes and pull the sound together.

Blake Mills

January 22nd, 2011

This is the weekend, and for a change, unlike prior weekends, I am trying to regain strength and energy, thus to get some rest, get my head cleaned. This song has a Bon Iver twist to it, although it is an Americana pop folkish jam, and something about it grabbed my attention and made spin it more than once. The 2nd upbeat part has a Fleetwood Mac`s Rumors color to it and I really dig this cheesy brassy chorus part. Blake Mills got an impressive resume already, and he is only 23 year old. He’s toured with the likes of Band Of Horses, Jenny Lewis, and Cass McCombs and has recorded as a session musician with Julian Casablancas, Andrew Bird, and.. Kid Rock
