BENNI HEMM HEMM DEBUTS NEW HAND-DRAWN VIDEO FOR “RETALIATE”

May 6th, 2010

Iceland via Scotland artist Benni Hemm Hemm aka Benedikt Hermannsson recently debuted a brand new, hand-drawn video for his song, “Retaliate,”  via AOL Spinner. Click on the image above for the Vimeo link. Directed by Edinburgh illustrators/comic book artists Michael Kirkham and Vivien McDermid, “Retaliate” is the title track off his third EP, (the first to be sung completely in English) and sixth overall release, and is available now on Kimi Records.

Although Benni Hemm Hemm’s live shows have been known to incorporate up to 35 performers at once, Benni discovered a new affinity for home recording, choosing to strip things down for this new release, rather than make his usual pilgrimage to Sundlaugin, the Sigur Rós studio.  With Benni playing the majority of the instruments, in addition to the contributions of Emily Scott (double bass) and Peter Liddle (trumpet & alto-horn), the Retaliate EP, is a collection of five songs which feature knives, gold, lazy pioneers, confident talibans, blood thirsty vampires, Stan-Stan-the-caretaker-man and last but not least blood, lots of blood.

Benni Hemm Hemm will tour Europe this spring and summer, with plans to hit the US later this year.

BENNI HEMM HEMM RELEASES NEW HOMESPUN “RETALIATE” EP

March 2nd, 2010

During a recent move to Edinburgh, Scotland, Iceland native Benni Hemm Hemm aka Benedikt Hermannsson learned two things: 1.) to speak Scottish, and 2.) that it’s just as much fun recording at home as it is to record in Sundlaugin, the Sigur Rós studio.

To practice his recently discovered knowledge, Benni made an EP with his home recording gear, aptly named, Retaliate. Benni plays most of the instruments, in addition to the wonderful contributions of Emily Scott (double bass) and Peter Liddle (trumpet & alto-horn)

Retaliate is Benni Hemm Hemm´s third EP (and sixth overall release), and is his first release sung completely in English. It will be released on a 10″ vinyl and on CD April 24th on Kimi Records (FM Belfast, Reykjavik!). Benni Hemm Hemm will tour Europe this spring and summer, with plans to hit the US later this year. FM BELFAST ANNOUNCES US DEBUT

January 30th, 2010

After being one of the most talked-about bands all over Europe, due in no small part to their energetic and engaging live show, Reykjavik’s FM Belfast are set to release their debut album in the US, how to make friends. Due out in Spring 2010 on Kimi Records (Benni Hemm Hemm, Retro Stefson, Reykjavik!), how to make friends is a careening electro-pop album full of unexpected jolts and turns, including trumpets, cowbells, and plenty of seething synths. After a local release, how to make friends sold over 5,000 copies in Iceland, and with it the band is poised to bring the party to the states.

What started as an informal duo in 2005 has developed into a sizable army of anywhere from 3 to 45 performers (including members of múm and Benni Hemm Hemm). Despite not having an album out in the US last year, FM Belfast became a must-see band at SXSW ’09, giving out sticks of gum and drawings with their CDs and playing to packed venues. The Austin Chronicle listed them as one of their “Bands to Watch,” while the Denver Post named them one of the “Top 10 New Finds”, calling them “one of the most refreshing” bands at SXSW. SPIN soon joined the bandwagon, making them “Artist of the Day” and proclaiming, “It’s gloriously kitschy, Commodore-64-style digipop… kind of like a low-fi version of Royksopp.” The BBC enthused, “Last night I got as excited by a new band as I’ve ever been in my life… FM Belfast are utterly fantastic.”

In the meantime, FM Belfast kept busy remixing tracks for other artists including múm, Retro Stefson, Skatar, Nix Noltes, Gus Gus, and Kasper Bjorke. After years of playing their songs to live audiences, FM Belfast is set to expand their reach with how to make friends.
