Pauline Andres’s music is being described as ”Liquor soaked alt-country made in Berlin”, Born in France, Pauline Andrès plays guitar and writes stories about drunks, working men and hipsters, even if she admits knowing less about the latter. She sings about hangovers, the hunt for a home, Russian fairytales and sometimes murders too. Born in a French minors town on the border in a mixed family, long trips across Europe were part of growing up. Listening to rock and country music too. “I’ve always related to Southern US music just as much as French accordion. It’s a shame we didn’t have something similar to Blues and Country here when all the men used to work in the mine… or even once they all got laid off”.
In 2012, she settled down in Berlin after much roaming and started working with other musicians in town and recently started gigging between Kreuzberg and Neukölln. We received couple of demos and we really dig her dramatic Marlene Dietrich voice and Nick Cave‘s dark story telling ballads. Check out her demo ‘Highway-landscapes’.
I have just heard a song on Tonje’s facebook page (Co editor at NFOP), of Helmut, a Berlin artist with such a precious gem. A small song, simple and touching.
Our dear and extremely busy Berlin friend Matthias Kanik, the man behind Ghostandthesong, and one of the most intriguing musicians hailing from the Berlin experimental scene had made a May Mixtape for us, and the way he describes it,..” I did not make a normal mix tape.- it s a kind of collage. there are always songs mixed over each other”. A wild 30 minutes of “a very experimental, Kraut-Rock journey.
And watch this funky Ou Inme video, created by multimedia animation studio hypertrashwonderland – the brain child of director and digital filmmaker Marcus Grysczok.
Personally, if I was to make an album, and a producer would come up to me and ask me how I wanted it to sound my reply would be; “like ‘Bones‘ by Fenster”.. This magnificent album is coming out by March 2012 on Morr music. The sound of bedroom music, dry small and just right drums with gorgeous and tasteful guitars, everything is being placed perfectly in the mix and balance of things. A perfect mixture of lo and hi. Listen to an appetizer and wait patiently for this one. Its well worth the wait.
‘Ghostandthesong’ is Matthias Kanik’s homerecording project released with a split together with Chris Rehm on Dayvan Zombear’s new label DZ tapes. MK is based in Berlin. Trying to put together a live show now experimenting jamming with different musicians, making some acidy psychedelic bluesy neo-surrealistic punkish rock music, some Sun Araw type of environment. Watch out for this brilliant musician cause underneath the hazy screen , he really has something to say. Buy his music HERE
Freakish Atlantic are a duo hailing from Berlin. Their debut EP “siren songs” has just come out yesterday on Housewarming records . I have just heard a brilliant cover they did of Lana del Ray’s ‘Video Games’. To stream the whole EP. Erik David Hidde is theeee man.
My favorite music blog is No Fear of pop. I love almost every track they write about and got to admit that most artists they mention I have never heard of. I am always on the lookout for some new stuff, and I visit NFOP almost daily. One of the artists they wrote about recently is another boy from Canada, this time an IDM artist. Woulg is the name, AKA Greg Debicki, and in his case, I got to admit, I really dig the choice of sounds, sweet, bellish, with lots of room to breathe and dream, minimal vocal line that made me think of Burial. I was trying to figure out what was it that made this track stand out the first time I have heard it. I guess its not washed out with huge halls of reverb like every other piece of music today. Besides, I respect anyone who uses my setup, meaning, Ableton live, etc.
I needed to meditate today, but since I suck at thinking of a mantra or concentrating, I had to find another way. Music is always my first choice, but then, one needs to find the right record. And the right environment, or set. I took my small consumer HD Canon camera, and my Ipod armed with Soley`s new album, and to a walk to the river by my house, (I live in the middle of the city, and my river might not be what you imagine when you think of one, but hey, that`s what I got). While walking down there, I put ‘Kill the clown’ on repeat, and shot some nature moving stills. This is a pretty spontaneous clip I came up with, so lay back, take a hit off your fav smoke and sink to it….. Pre order the album here.. ‘We Sink‘ is out September 2nd on Morr Music, Berlin. Special thanks to Flow at Morr
Jacob Faurholt is a trustworthy dude. We simply trust his taste in music. He introduced us to a friend and collaborator, Soren Brothers, a Canadian musician whom he met a couple of years ago in Montreal, and had moved to Berlin around the same time he did. That’s about the only thing we could tell you about SB, but I guess his music speaks for itself. Listen to ‘Carden Plains‘ by ‘Man meets bear’, SB`s psuedonimon.
