The Beardy Durfs

April 28th, 2012

Somehow, the cacophony, noise and mayhem created by The Beardy Durfs through their modified guitar pedals, homemade amps, broken guitars and seriously damaged drum kit, sounds real pleasant and absurdly enough, soothing to my ear. The Beardy Durfs hail from Copenhagen and they have just signed with the progressive Danish label Pad & Pen Records. Throughout 2012, the band will release a number of 7” singles, which will be compiled on their debut full length LP at the end of the year. The releases will be followed by a long line of small club shows in Denmark and abroad.

Jimmy Joe Roche is an American visual artist residing in Baltimore, MD. His videos have been screened internationally in venues including the Royal Academy of Arts in London, Roskilde Music Festival in Denmark, Boston Institute of Contemporary Art, J. Paul Getty Museum , Clair-obscur Filmfestival in Switzerland, and Baltimore Musesum of Art to name only a few. Roche has toured the US performing live video and sound work with his friend and collaborator Dan Deacon, as well as other Baltimore musicians. In 2008 Roche had his first solo show at Rare Gallery in New York, and is currently preparing for his second solo show at Rare scheduled for the fall of 2010.

In 2010, composer Dan Deacon Jimmy Joe Roche of the Wham City art collective were invited to a three-week residency in Hilvarenbeek, Netherlands as part of Incubate, a multidisciplinary international arts festival. Dan and Jimmy used those three weeks to shoot a short film. Working loosely from a collaborative script, they filmed local residents as actors & singers, with little rehearsal and shooting very few takes. Several additional scenes were appended last-minute, inspired by the locations and props available.

Hilvarenbeek” interweaves the Baltimore DIY aesthetic, popular Americana, the rich beauty of the Netherlands, and Dutch cutlure into a surreal narrative. The result is a melting pot of experimental performance & sound, pop fantasy, and social commentary. “Hilvarenbeek” debuted at the Maryland Film Festival on May 8, 2011.
