The extraordinary ordinary life of Jose Gonzales

August 24th, 2010

I like the beginning of the Jose Gonzales documentary teaser.. Its talking about an artist`s toughest hurdle: The constant struggle with your inner critic, the voices that say – oh, this track is shit…. I guess in Jose`s case, he is constantly winning the battle… Watch the trailer

I have mentioned Jose Gonzales and  his recent musical venture Junip  few weeks ago. I have heard a song my friend sent me that had featured Mia Doi Todd. Her seventh album ‘GEA’ opener, ‘River of life’ is built around Jose Gonzales unique playing, open classical guitar arpeggios , and a hypnotic percussion and eastern soundscape bringing it home. Buy the record.

It`s not the first time I write about Jose Gonzales, and I guess no need to introduce him to you guys. I love what he was doing in the past, just his unique playing, tunings, strumming or picking, and this voice you could recognize standing 2 miles away. Now he is back with a band, Junip, but don’t worry, it doesn’t take away of the JG magic or sound. With the help of drummer Elias Araya, that sounds just right; No over playing, simple and to the point, he hears what the song needs, and this great Organ/ elec piano/keyboard guy Tobias Winterkorn.

Saw him play on a street fair. 8 string guitar made for him, with 2 extra bass strings, reminded me of a latin Jose Gonzalez, originaly from Argentina, traveling around and now in Israel, Lautaro Feldman sounds good. He says his 8 string classical guitar and its sound give him inspiration. Listen to Trampa
