The village to the vale

November 25th, 2011

Autumn chorus write about their debut: ..” Largely mixed and produced by the band, every song had been picked apart during the recording process to ensure that every note was there for a reason, and that more importantly each song had heart”…Their debut reminds me of progressive rock music albums I grew up listening to, in the vein of Genesis, Pink Floyd, King Crimson, ELP and many great others. They are telling a story, and the album is a one piece should be listened to as a whole, not just one great song or a single. From the opening piece you know that you are onto something different, and if you have lost your attention span because everything today is about headlines and titles and brief introductions and 70 note tweets, continue and look for immediate art cause this band took the time and you had better sit down, light up a fat joint, put your expensive headphones on and let them carry you away.

Escape the day

May 1st, 2011

While listening to ‘Hallways’, the first track of this album, I was afraid it would turn into a Scorpions ballad, but was relieved to find out this is neither the case with `Escape the day’ nor it is with ‘Ghostless‘, their magnificent and only album, where the dark crystal clear guitars remained clean until halfway through the record, while it`s sound, atmosphere and mood, reminded me of great progressive rock albums I grew up on, like King Crimson`s ‘Islands’ or ‘Red’, yet songs like the titke track , got Minimal compact traces.

Escape the Day was a post-rock band, formed by Florian and Lars in Berlin, Germany in 2003. Their debut album , Ghostless, was supposed to be released in 2005. And if this album`s content is not enough, it`s got a story behind it. I have read it on ‘I could die tomorrow’, written by Asa, one of the friends writing for this great blog..” A very musically knowledgeable friend of mine first told me of this band and album a year ago. He’d begun corresponding in 2004 or 2005 with EtD’s Florian Rehnse. Over the subsequent months, many letters were exchanged, culminating in my friend receiving a huge box of ETD merch, CDs and rare compilation records from Florian. After this came a note in which Florian wrote that he would soon be taking his own life, and that he appreciated everything my friend (who’s in a band of note) had written, sent, and recorded. While technically unfinished from the point of view of Florian’s collaborator, Lars, Ghostless is nonetheless the band’s only release, distributed for free and dedicated to the love and life of his friend and bandmate…
