PEASANT Announces New Shows with Fucked Up, Kurt Vile, Seedy Seeds and More + Featured on RCRD LBL!

February 14th, 2010

When Damien DeRose turned eighteen, he dropped out of school, packed up his guitar, and bought a sailboat in California with a friend. The plan was to sail down the coast, live life the simple way, and let the wind dictate the pace. However, as life would have it, DeRose’s journey took a different course and while the ship may not have left the harbor, he would find himself on a new journey writing and traveling across the U.S and Europe. A few years later, DeRose released a captivating home-recorded debut, and began to introduce himself to fans around the globe under the name Peasant. “Fear Not Distant Lover”, a collection of thought-provoking lo-fi folk/pop songs, captured the ears and hearts of fans and reviewers alike.

In 2008, Peasant signed with Paper Garden Records and released his first studio album entitled, “On The Ground”. In 2009, the record gained distribution through Team Love and had songs featured on TV shows including Diablo Cody’s “The United States of Tara” and the season premier of “Bones”. Also in ’09, the music video for “We’re Good” premiered on Stereogum.com and was featured on MTVU, and Fuse.TV. While touring throughout 2008-09, he performed and recorded live sessions for Daytrotter, WOXY, and LaundroMatinee. Although the street is still as good a place as any to play, Peasant has recently shared the stage with Cursive, Delta Spirit, Deer Tick at South By Southwest and the Montreal Pop Fest. Also in 2009, he squeezed in a full European tour, releasing “On The Ground” to a new and welcoming international audience.

While Peasant’s new album was recorded in several locales, DeRose spent the majority of his time in the attic of a 200-year-old farmhouse. The record, titled “Shady Retreat”, puts together the techniques DeRose learned in the studio for On The Ground, while staying true to his DIY beginnings. It’s a gorgeous and ambitious collection of Peasant’s best, most exciting work. Sixties-esque guitar and pop songs are encircled with layered harmonies and synths, as Peasant sings his dreamy lyrics with his usual conviction. The first single, “The End”, was released in August 2009 and was greeted warmly, with more copies sold on iTunes than any of Peasant’s previous releases, proving that DeRose has the potential to shine into a new light in 2010.

With Peasant’s big release of Shady Retreat just a few weeks away, the success and love of Peasant has begun to skyrocket. Having just received a stellar review from RCRDLBL.com and confirmed shows at some of the best venues in the Northeast, Peasant will find himself sharing the stage with Rocky Votolato in NYC on 2/24 and with Kurt Vile and Fucked Up (what?!) in Toronto a few days later on 2/26 for a sold out show.

This is just the beginning, though, as Peasant continues with solid shows throughout March with a CD release party in Philadelphia on 3/11 (with Emanuel and the Fear) at World Café Live and then a tour with Seedy Seeds to Austin for SXSW and back, hitting up Covington, KY (3/12), Louisville,KY (3/14), St. Louis, MO (3/15) and New Orleans (3/24) and circling back to Brooklyn to play Glasslands on 3/31.
