Odd Vantage

Albert Murienne had caught me off guard. Its just one of those moments, while I was scheduling a doctor’s appointment for my mom, paying a license voucher at the post office, you know, the type of stuff that makes you regret you are a sophisticated animal…then I have checked upon my emails, looking for the irritating stuff first, naturally, to get it out of the way, and stumbled upon this Black Coffee & Cherry Pie new release, which is how Albert titles this new venture , a brainchild of his after 8 years of turntabling. It all happened after he had discovered  the guitar, and I can assure you shit is working. Sweet, simple, no manouvers, straight forward a real enjoyable record. Plus you could head over to his bandcamp page and download for free…Just make sure you click the like button, cause this is the least you could do…Love this album….

This is one of the best albums I have heard in awhile. It takes a second for you to realize how serious Zach Saginaw is about his art. After listening to this masterpiece 3-4 times I have read his Ghostly bio and understood where this extremely rich output comes from. ..”Zach records under the name Shigeto. It’s his middle name; it’s also his grandfather’s name, a tribute to the Japanese branch of Zach’s family tree. Shigeto also means “to grow bigger”—appropriate, given Zach’s premature birth-weight of less than a pound. Today, Shigeto stands for Zach’s vividly beautiful electronic music. Beat-driven but given to richly textured sound design. Zach’s father spoon-fed him old Motown and jazz records by the crateload. Zach picked up the drums at an early age, spending much of his childhood playing in the Detroit/Ann Arbor music scene. After nearly flunking out of high school—save for his music studies—Zach spent three years studying jazz at the New School in NYC and three more in London, where he began woodshedding, obsessed with learning electronic production. Soon enough, beats materialized, Zach moved to Brooklyn and took up the name Shigeto. His upcoming 2012 release, Lineage—a mini-LP of sorts that has a complex constellation of sounds and ideas that we have come to expect from the producer/drummer. Shigeto was one of the first of a wave of young artists who grew up influenced by the label’s early output. And again, names come into play. “Putting out these records on Ghostly isn’t just ‘getting signed,’ for me,” says Zach, “it’s becoming part of a family, an influence that I’ve respected forever”…. Tlefou is a London based musician / visual artist working in an experimental style producing textured blurry soundcapes with fractured vocals floating between form and improvisation. Tlefou is a self-produced musician rendering hypnotic and atmospheric soundtracks, which look out with half opened eyes, between dream and reality, Lo-fi ambient wooziness, feedback drones with jagged delicacy, slabs of distortion mix with field recordings hiss, flutter and crackle.

The forthcoming double-disc Flumina is the fruits of collaboration of Christian Fennesz and Ryuici Sakamoto. Sakamato recorded 24 different improvisational piano pieces in 24 different keys, and then sent them to Fennesz, who reworked them with his usual evocative-reverb style. This is the album opener “0318. Purchase the album Here if you like.

Personally, if I was to make an album, and a producer would come up to me and ask me how I wanted it to sound my reply would be; “like ‘Bones‘ by Fenster”.. This magnificent album is coming out by March 2012 on Morr music. The sound of bedroom music, dry small and just right drums with gorgeous and tasteful guitars, everything is being placed perfectly in the mix and balance of things. A perfect mixture of lo and hi. Listen to an appetizer and wait patiently for this one. Its well worth the wait.
