Kathryn Calder of The New Pornographers preps debut solo album, Are You My Mother?

May 29th, 2010

Some things are worth waiting for, and this couldn’t be more true of Kathryn Calder’s debut solo album Are You My Mother? – a recording jam-packed with contributions from her amazing friends Neko Case, Kurt Dahle and Todd Fancey of The New Pornographers and members of Ladyhawk and Frog Eyes.

After playing keyboards and singing for Immaculate Machine and The New Pornographers for the past several years, a little voice in Kathryn Calder’s head started to ask her, ‘What would it be like to put out your own record?’ When she couldn’t wait any longer to find out, she and her producer, Colin Stewart, took over her childhood home in Victoria, BC and set up an impromptu recording studio. With little in the way of props or technology, the pair started to cobble together the songs that would become Are you my Mother?.

Are you my Mother? is a transitional record from an already accomplished artist firmly hitting her stride as a solo performer. With this record, Kathryn Calder proves herself as a musician to watch, and as someone who makes music that’s built to last. Are you my Mother? offers a timeless collection of songs, and years from now you’ll be able to say that you were there.

** Imaad Wasif announces Feb. Thur. night Spaceland residency, tour dates with Dead Meadow **

January 21st, 2010

Sophomore album ‘Strange Hexes’ revealed Wasif’s varied influences. The album was recorded with his band ‘Two Part Beast’ (Bobb Bruno and Adam Garcia) and self-released in March 2008. That album was the first to hint at the distinctive sound Wasif has ultimately crafted for himself; a blast of post-modern psychedelic rock that is at once potent and refined. The album will be re-released by Tee Pee Records in 2010.

Having gained a reputation for his intense live shows while opening for RTX, The Raconteurs, Neko Case, Arthur Lee’s Love and Sebadoh, Wasif has plans for an extensive tour in the fall of 2009. He can also be found playing guitar on “Little Shadow” from the YYY’s latest album, It’s Blitz! and Lou Barlow’s forthcoming solo album, ‘Goodnight Unknown’. His collaboration with Karen O of Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Bradford Cox of Deerhunter, and “Little” Jack Lawrence of The Raconteurs and Dead Weather on the score for the Spike Jonze-directed film adaptation of ‘Where The Wild Things Are’ hits theaters in October.

The theme of love in its many guises, both as redemption and call to arms, is one that Wasif returns to again and again in his songs. Its mythical quality becomes a springboard from which he explores the mysteries of life and the universe on his third album, The Voidist. Recorded with Two Part Beast, plus guests Dale Crover (Melvins) and Greg Burns (Red Sparowes), by Chad Bamford (Weezer) with additional recordings by Mathias Schneeberger (The Obsessed, Gutter Twins), the release is due from Tee Pee Records in October 2009.

Deer Tick announces Spring tour dates

January 18th, 2010

After finishing a US run with Neko Case late last year, Deer Tick completed a three week European tour – upon their return to the US on Dec. 13 the band entered the studio to put the finishing touches on its as-yet-untitled third album, which will be released in the first half of this year. The band’s first big show of 2010 will be in Los Angeles, as part of the First Fridays series at the Natural History Museum, then in April and May they’ll head out with Dr. Dog where they’ll hit the West Coast again, as well as Texas, the South and Northeast. The More Fuel For the Fire EP, which was previously an iTunes exclusive, is now available via all digital services.

About the new EP:

As the title would suggest, Deer Tick’s More Fuel for the Fire EP tops off an explosive 2009 for the band that released Rolling Stone’s “country-rock breakthrough of the year” nine months earlier. Taken mostly from a month-long recording session in upstate New York nicknamed “The Black Dirt Sessions”, More Fuel for the Fire features three new studio tracks as well as a live version of “Straight Into A Storm” (from Born on Flag Day) recorded in Charlotte, NC at the Visulite Theatre. The songs have become staples of Deer Tick’s live shows over the past year, and are already fan favorites-and that’s who this one’s for…
