Highway Landscapes

January 13th, 2013

Pauline Andres’s music is being described as ”Liquor soaked alt-country made in Berlin”, Born in France, Pauline Andrès plays guitar and writes stories about drunks, working men and hipsters, even if she admits knowing less about the latter. She sings about hangovers, the hunt for a home, Russian fairytales and sometimes murders too. Born in a French minors town on the border in a mixed family, long trips across Europe were part of growing up. Listening to rock and country music too. “I’ve always related to Southern US music just as much as French accordion. It’s a shame we didn’t have something similar to Blues and Country here when all the men used to work in the mine… or even once they all got laid off”.

In 2012, she settled down in Berlin after much roaming and started working with other musicians in town and recently started gigging between Kreuzberg and Neukölln. We received couple of demos and we really dig her dramatic Marlene Dietrich voice and Nick Cave‘s dark story telling ballads. Check out her demo ‘Highway-landscapes’.

White Billie

January 7th, 2009

Few years ago, after hearing Ben Webster for the first time, and listening to his breathy whispery soulful sound, I started learning to play the sax. I think listening to Karen Dalton`s hoarse voice had the same effect on me. The first thing that comes to mind is Billie Holiday that is one of my favorite singers. I was amazed to find out Karen was white cause I had imagined her quite differently. Another thing that shocked me was her guitar playing. Nothing fits about her: Looks, voice, playing… Bob Dylan wrote about her:…” ‘My favorite singer in the place (Greenwich Village’s Cafe Wha) was Karen Dalton, she was a tall white blues singer and guitar player, funky, lanky and sultry. Karen had a voice like Billie Holliday’s and played guitar like Jimmy Reed and went all the way with it”…. Nick Cave said she is his favorite blues singer.

Something on my mind
