…And if we deal with the Fmly collective or Breakfast of champs records, it’s a good opportunity to mention and listen to this 20 yrs old dude, Philip Seymour Hoffman ( prefers to leave his real name out of this). All tunes on this tape, ‘The Lighthouse Itself Is The Rocket’, were recorded between the hours of 2am and 5am in a 7′x10′ New York bedroom and the majority of tracks, including lyrics, were improvised during recording. Philip Seymour Hoffman has appeared at CMJ & SXSW as well. Buy this tape HERE

Minimal composers Terry Riley and Steve Reich were the inspiring force behind Austin-based group The Octopus Project venture Hexadecagon, debuted as a live performance and soon to be released in album form October 26, 2010 on Peek-A-Boo Records.
Using custom electronics (The Bend Matrix) and pushing existing software (Ableton Live, VDMX, OSCulator) to its limits, they arranged eight speakers in a circle around the audience, with the audience surrounding the band at the center, accompanied by eight synchronized video projections, designed by Austin digital artist Wiley Wiggins.
The Octopus Project performed Hexadecagon live twice to over-capacity crowds during SXSW 2010to emphatically positive reception. USA Today ranked the performance one of its top five shows of SXSW.
The band spent the next two months recording in their Austin home studio and mixing in Dallas withJohn Congleton (St. Vincent, Explosions In the Sky, Clinic, The Walkmen). Listen to Toneloop
Having recently returned to the states after a European tour, Copenhagen-via-NYC musician CALLmeKAT will be performing several dates in June, including a set of dates at NXNE in Toronto. Known for her distinctly Scandinavian sound: melancholic, dreamy pop, CALLmeKAT is the moniker of Danish singer, keyboardista and composer Katrine Ottosen. Throughout Europe and Scandinavia, CALLmeKAT has toured as solo headliner as well as opening for notable artists such as Sebastien Tellier, Au Revoir Simone, Okkervil River, The Dø and Nouvelle Vague, amongst others.
In 2009, CALLmeKAT played numerous critically-acclaimed shows, received an Underground Music Award for “Best Alternative Act,” and was granted one of the Danish Art Council’s prestigious grants for young, talented artists with international ambition and potential. She then made an appearance at the 2010 SXSW Festival, where she was asked to perform a “Tiny Desk SXSW Concert” on NPR‘s All Things Considered. This was followed by a pick on both Bob Boilen and Robin Hilton’s (NPR) “Who We Liked-list” from this year’s SxSW. During the festival, she was also filmed by Yours Tru.ly for an intimate parking lot performance.
Living in New York since early 2010, she recently collaborated with Joe Magistro (Prophet Omega) on finishing her international debut When Owls Are Out, which consists of reworked and remixed material from her Scandinavian 2008 release Fall Down, and also brand new recordings.
Check out CALLmeKAT’s video for the single “My Sea,” directed by D.R. Kelley and filmed on location in Los Angeles.

Philadelphia pop quartet Drink Up Buttercup released their first full length album, Born and Thrown on a Hook on March 23, 2010 via Yep Roc Records.Friday, April 16th, 2010
Philadelphia pop quartet Drink Up Buttercup released their first full length album, Born and Thrown on a Hook on March 23, 2010 via Yep Roc Records. First brought to the attention of music fans through their debut ‘Sosey & Dosey’ 7” on Brooklyn’s Kanine Records (Grizzly Bear, Chairlift), the Philly group comprised of Jim Harvey (vocals, guitar), Ben Money (bass, organ), Mike Cammarata (drums) and Farzad Houshiarnejad (keyboards) stormed CMJ and SXSW and earned early praise. Described as, “Beatle-esque but in a kitchen sink kind of way,” (Brooklyn Vegan) and “60’s psychedelic carnival” (Stereogum) the band’s nuanced yet bombastic live show is a vital part of its growing legend, with the New York Times saying that DUB, “mesmerizes and clobbers live.” Drink Up Buttercup may hail from Philadelphia but the geography of their debut album is less easily located on a physical map. It’s an occasionally surreal mythology filled with tales of hopelessly flawed characters, star-crossed lovers, drunks, fairy tales & bad trips. It exists in a world touched upon previously by Tom Waits, Hans Christian Anderson and Lloyd Kaufman while musically it follows the direct lineage of classic songwriting: Bowie, The Beatles & The Beach Boys’ late 60s lysergia, early Roxy Music, Sabbath’s bass heavy pulse & the crescendos of Arcade Fire. Born and Thrown on a Hook, produced by sought after Philly go-to-guy Bill Moriarty (Dr. Dog, Man Man) and mixed by Rusty Santos (Animal Collective, Final Fantasy, Panda Bear), follows the ‘Even Think’ 7” (their first release on Yep Roc) which enjoyed remixes from Andrew W.K. and electro-pop maestro Cale Parks. The release of their debut full-length foreshadows a busy 2010 for DUB, with the band booking shows by the fistful to build on live buzz created through tireless east coast gigging, as well as by having shared the stage with talented bands like Dr. Dog, Bishop Allen, Marnie Stern, Fiery Furnaces, Blood Warrior, Stellastarr and Free Energy.

Hot on the heels of their successful US debut at this year’s SXSW Music Festival in Austin, Texas, two weeks ago, London-based electro-pop trio CHEW LiPS are excited to announce they will be performing at Littlefield in Brooklyn, NY, on Monday, April 12. As their first ever show in the New York City area, the band will be showcasing their powerful and vivacious live show while performing tracks off their highly-acclaimed debut album “Unicorn,” an album that was recently released in the UK on January 25.
“Unicorn” was produced by Dave Kosten (Bat for Lashes), and is an album that presents itself as a gloriously off-kilter take on pop with a number of wayward electronic elements. Made up of ten tracks of impeccably-executed future-pop that veers from grinding electro-pop grooves to fevered howls of beat-heavy R&B, “Unicorn” is a record fit to herald a new decade.

LA-based indie artist ACTIVE CHILD (a.k.a. songwriter/musician Pat Grossi) will release his highly-anticipated EP June 1st on Filter US Recordings. Titled Curtis Lane, the EP is ACTIVE CHILD’s first stateside offering; he released several singles in the UK to significant critical acclaim. Track listing for Curtis Lane below.
In support of the release, ACTIVE CHILD will embark on a several-week European tour, kicking on May 13th with an appearance at the Great Escape Festival in Brighton, UK. ACTIVE CHILD will then join NYC indie rock band White Rabbits for a string of dates that wraps up June 3rd in Rotterdam, Netherlands. Full European tour dates below.
ACTIVE CHILD is fresh off of a successful run of shows at the SXSW Music Conference in Austin, TX. The highly-influential NME lauded the ingenuity and originality of his live performance: “How often do you get to see a harp played at a hip indie show? Not often. How gutted am I that I didn’t record one of the harpy tracks? Very.” Pitchfork went on to applaud Grossi’s “hushed and otherworldly falsetto synthpop” and called ACTIVE CHILD’s music “so overwhelmingly pretty that it absorbs whatever’s around it… the basic elements of a possible greatness are all in there.”

Wunderbar presents Lunch with the Germans, a first-ever music and culinary event, at SXSW 2010. Acquaint yourself with some of Germany’s best and brightest while sampling the country’s traditional and modern culinary delights. Finally, German music and food join the SXSW party, bringing you one stellar chance to network, dance, and chow down!
Lunch with the Germans will take place from 12-3pm Thursday, March 18 at a lovely modern diner and nightclub on 6th Street (more info at the RSVP link below). Hayk Seirig and Phillip Patzig, the two gourmet chefs behind Berlin’s outdoor venue/gastropub Bar 25, will man the stoves, while staples in the underground house music scene will provide entertainment. Get Physical’s DJ Heidi will be performing as well as Kompakt’s DJ Tobias Thomas and Matias Aguayo. Get your invitation at www.initiative-music.de/sxsw to ensure your place at this one-of-a-kind event!
Initiative Musik will be the official host of the event financed by the German Federal Minister of Economics and Technology. Initiative Musik is a funding agency set up by the German government to sustain the country’s music industry. Specializing in primarily Rock, Pop, and Jazz, the goal of agency is to promote the export of German music, new artists, and encourage cultural diversity with in the industry.
The lunch is the first time localized German organizations are coming together to present some of the best talent they have to offer. C/o Pop is a Cologne -based organization that presents annual festivals and conferences dedicated to furthering contemporary pop culture of all varieties. ReeperbahnFestival is Hamburg‘s answer to unleashing creative energy: it houses performances, panels, and receptions. (And keep an eye out: Reeperbahn will also be sponsoring a barbeque and a Filter event!) Jazzahead! is a Bremen-based organization that presents jazz from all over the world with a focus on European jazz. It has established itself as the place to go to meet important industry players and to gain insight into what’s happening in the scene. And, finally, Berlin Musik Week (with its trade fair Popkomm), the first of its kind to take place in September 2010.
Be sure to check out the wide range of German acts represented at this year’s SXSW. From soul to avant-garde experimentalism, there’s far more to the German music scene than their iconic electro (though, while we’re at it, there’s an impressive array of that, too…). At SXSW, a German Music Guide will be circulating, so keep an eye out for it and take full advantage of these great German artists! Here are a few highlights:
Niobe is Tomlab artist Yvonne Cornelius, a mainstay of the international experimental music scene for the last 15 years. Her music is a spirited interplay of classic and popular set pieces.
Missincat is Berlin-based songwriter Caterina Barbieri, whose minimal folk songs gained critical acclaim on her 2009 debut, “Back on my Feet.”
Matias Aguayo The native Chilean is a child of the Cologne electro-scene, and has released his EPs, remixes, and two full-lengths through electro label Kompakt.
Malente After spending his youth doing hip hop and pop and achieving positive feedback, Malente turned towards electronic music with lasting success.
Hauschka is Dusseldorf pianist and composer Volker Bertelmann, one of the most important contemporary figures of the national and international avant-garde music scene.
