Boonaroo updates

Saturday, March 6th, 2010

Superfly and A.C. Entertainment are proud to announce that the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival has added several artists to the 2010 event, further diversifying a wonderfully eclectic and stellar lineup. Updates include Bonnaroo veterans Ween, Galactic and Umphrey’s McGee as as well as gifted singer/songwriter Brandi Carlisle and the genre- bending, post-punk trio The Gossip. A full list of confirmed acts follows.

The largest and most revered music and camping event in the country, Bonnaroo has elevated the American rock festival to an unprecedented level. The Wall Street Journal called Bonnaroo “one of rock’s best festivals,” continuing to hail that the 2009 lineup “fairly bursts with some of the most gifted acts in rock and pop.” Entertainment Weekly called it “the best of all sonic worlds,” while the New York Times said, “Bonnaroo’s very loose mandate – and a wise one for any festival – is to choose performers who deliver in a live performance, with current hits and studio expertise as lower priorities. One of the pleasures of the festival is that it defies narrowcasting: It’s not an Americana festival, an indie-rock festival, a gathering of 2008-9 hitmakers or anything but what its producers and, presumably, ticket-buyers are happy to hear.” Rolling Stone called Bonnaroo “one of the 50 moments to change the history of rock and roll.”

Special programs announced for festival include:

Clogs plus special guests

Terry Riley pipe organ concert

Ben Frost / Tim Hecker collaboration

Bang On A Can playing David Longstreth, Thurston Moore and more

Full concert schedule unveiled today, Wednesday 2/17

KNOXVILLE, TN. The second Big Ears Festival in Knoxville, Tennessee during the weekend of March 26 – 28, 2010 continues to expand with Sufjan Stevens, Adrian Belew, William Basinski, Liturgy, Konk Pack, Abe Vigoda, and Ches Smith now slated to join the lineup.

In addition the festival has unveiled some of the unique and rare performances to be experienced this year.

* Sufjan Stevens along with Matt Berninger and Aaron Dessner of The National and Shara Warden (My Brightest Diamond) will be joining Clogs in their performance of the new song cycle ‘The Creatures in the Garden of Lady Walton.’ Big Ears 2010 will feature the only live performance of the piece currently scheduled with all of the guest vocalists from the recording, which is slated to be released in early March.

* Electronic ambient composer Tim Hecker will be collaborating for the first time with composer/ performer Ben Frost, each of whom will also be performing separately during the weekend.

* The Bang on a Can All-Stars will perform a program of pieces written for them by the Dirty Projectors’ Dave Longstreth and Thurston Moore as well as Michael Gordon and Evan Ziporyn.

* In addition, Bang on a Can will perform Brian Eno’s ‘Music for Airports’ in a special show with the Books and Tim Hecker.

* Rock guitar legend Adrian Belew (Frank Zappa, David Bowie, Talking Heads, King Crimson) will introduce his new solo work during the festival.

* Aritst-in-residence Terry Riley’s series of programs during the festival weekend will also feature some rarely heard work. Riley will perform a concert on the extraordinary new pipe organ at the University of Tennessee’s Cox Auditorium, presenting music commissioned in 2008 by the LA Philharmonic to christen the pipe organ at Disney Hall. This will mark the first time that the program has been presented outside of Los Angeles. Riley will also perform his rarely heard recent work, Autodreamographical Tales, with the Bang on a Can All-Stars, prior to a performance of his legendary masterwork, In C, with an all-star cast of festival performers. In addition, Riley will perform other solo work as well as with his quartet, featuring electric violin virtuoso Tracy Silverman, guitarist Gyan Riley, and drummer Ches Smith (of Secret Chiefs 3 and Marc Ribot’s Ceramic Dog). The Calder Quartet will also present a program of Riley’s string quartets as well.

The Big Ears Festival also marks a couple of other exciting “firsts”:

* It will be the first time the Dutch punk anarchists The Ex have ever performed south of the Mason Dixon line in their 30 year history…and the festival finale will feature the long-awaited return of the National, who will debut new material from their much anticipated new album to be released in May.

The full schedule of concerts will be announced today, Wednesday, February 17th, and tickets for the new shows will go on sale Friday, February 19th at 10:00 am. Tickets are already on sale for many of the major concert events of the weekend, and a limited number of “Inner Ear” all access weekend festival passes are still available as well.

Tickets are available through www.bigearsfestival.com or by calling 865.684.1200 ext. 2 between the hours of 10:00am and 5:00pm eastern.

Additional elements of the Big Ears Festival weekend will be revealed in the coming weeks, including surprise collaborations, art installations, a film program, workshops, lectures, interactive experiences, and more.

BIG EARS 2010 is celebrating the 75th birthday year of the legendary American minimalist composer, Terry Riley. The National’s Bryce Dessner is co-curating the weekend.

Artists performing include Vampire Weekend, the National, Joanna Newsom, Andrew W.K., St. Vincent, The xx, the Calder Quartet, Iva Bittova, Tim Hecker, Nico Muhly, Ben Frost, Sam Amidon, Doveman, jj, and more. For a complete listing and for more information, visit The Big Ear site.

…”Sometimes you have to put yourself first, no matter how difficult that notion seems; no matter how much time and effort you’ve already put into this one person—the person who’s reduced your very being to its absolute core. Just ask Peter Silberman, the string-pulling founder of The Antlers, a solo project that suddenly went widescreen on the self-released Hospice LP (now receiving a proper widespread pressing through Frenchkiss). The first Antlers effort to feature two key permanent players—powerhouse drummer Michael Lerner and the layer-lathering multi-instrumentalist Darby Cicci—it’s an album with a sound that’s actually as ambitious as its concept.

“Hospice came from the idea of caring for a terminal patient who’s mentally abusive to you,” says Silberman. “You don’t have the right to argue with them, either, because they’re the one who’s dying here; they’re the one that’s been dealt a wrong hand. So you take it, but you can only take so much. Eventually, you realize that this person is just destroying you.”

Appropriately enough, Hospice’s 10 distinct chapters resonate on debilitating sonic and lyrical levels, from the hypnotic harp and tension-ratcheting build of “Two” to the sing-or-sink choruses of “Bear” and the speaker-rattling peaks of “Sylvia,” easily one of the year’s most immediate epics. It’s here, amidst contrasting shards of ambient noise, sweeping strings and smoky horns, where The Antlers truly transcend Silberman’s singer-songwriter beginnings—a striking escalation of expectations first hinted at on 2008’s New York Hospitals EP. The progression doesn’t end there, either. In a move that could be taken as the riff-raking extension of his thorough guitar training (from the age of 6 ‘til right before college), “Atrophy” and “Wake” delve into sheets of distortion, subtle shades of soul, cicada-like effects and enough movements to fill an entire EP.

“We were going for something that’d be dense but not too complicated,” explains Silberman. “I hate the word ‘lush,’ but I guess that’s the best way of describing it. The structures are like pop songs—verse/chorus, verse/chorus—but the sound is a little more shoegaze-y or post-rocky.”

It’s about to get even more complicated, too, as The Antlers’ Technicolor-tinged trio take all of Hospice’s songs—and three previous releases—in a completely different direction, jettisoning a note-for-note rendition of the record for “a massive sound” doused in delay, reverb and unrehearsed chaos. And to think Cicci was a stage actor with a desire to drop it all for music just a few years ago.

“Hospice was the clear indication that this isn’t a singer-songwriter thing at all,” says Silberman. “Whatever we record next is going to define the three of us as a ‘band.’

He continues, “I always figured I’d be the ‘shredder’ in a group… But things somehow ended up this way.”

We wouldn’t have it any other way, either”…..

The Kissaway Trail Announce Spring US Tour and Release New Video for “SDP”!

Friday, February 12th, 2010

The Kissaway Trail will return to the States for the first time in 2 years this spring for a series of headlining club dates, performances at SXSW, and as main support for The Temper Trap on an extensive US jaunt. The Danish band return to America to debut songs from their new, highly anticipated release Sleep Mountain (Bella Union), produced by Peter Katis (Interpol, The National, Sigur Rós’ Jónsi). The Kissaway Trail will release their 12-track LP on April 20th, 2010.

Live, The Kissaway Trail’s music comes to life and the sheer power of all 5 members produces a wall of intricate and epic sounds. With all 5 band members sharing vocal duties, 4 on guitar and 2 on keys, the experience is truly memorable. The first single from the new album, “SDP,” has started picking up radio traction in England. Tastemaker stations like XFM and BBC 6 have already put the dramatic single in heavy rotation. The band recently released a new video for “SDP”, which premiered in the US on Filter.com. They said, “ ‘SDP’ consolidates the over 6-minute lead track from the band’s forthcoming album SLEEP MOUNTAIN into about half its original length, without losing any of its impact.”

The Kissaway Trail was formed by members Søren Corneliussen (Lead Vocals, Guitar, Keyboards) and Thomas Fagerlund (Lead Vocals, Guitar, Keyboards) who share duty as front-men and key songwriters. The duo previously recorded as the band, Isles, and released an album in 2005. Later, the pair was joined by members, Daniel Skjoldmose Hansen (Lead Guitar, Mandolin, Vocals), Hasse Mydtskov (Drums, Vocals) and Rune Pedersen (Bass Guitar, Vocals). Together, they recorded and released their debut self-titled album in 2007, which was received with deafening praise across the UK and Europe. A record that England’s The Independent called, “the debut album of the year.” Along with The Independents acclaim, the young band achieved 4-star reviews from top critics at The Guardian, Mojo and The Times, instating The Kissaway Trail’s musical promise. Sleep Mountain isn’t so much a reinvention for the Danish quintet, but a fabulous progression.
