See me not

November 11th, 2010

I love dirty beats and scratchy vinyl type sounds. Especially when ancient formats issues are so relevant, after Sony`s announcement last week.. Let`s declare this week as an ‘Analougue revenge week’. Munich based trio, Saroos, consists of 3 musicians/ tech wizards, Florian Zimmer (Jersey), Christoph Brander (Lali Puna, Console), and Max Punktezahl (The Notwist), and their 2nd album, ‘See me not’, is coming out this week on Notwist`s label Alien Transistor (row) and on Anticon (u.s. and japan). I have been listening to the title track, ‘See me not’, an instrumental hip hop type of thing, my favorite so far. This is a hypnotic piece, carried by a slow rough saturated breakbeat , enhanced with the sparse and smart use of odd samples and sounds & ultra distorted guitars. Saroos are bulding it`s tension slowly and while the track never really explodes, it is quite enough to keep you at the edge of your seat.

New Lali Puna record

January 28th, 2010

Lali Puna is coming out with a new record. Their first in over 5 years.

‘Our Inventions’ will be released April 6th on Morr Music, and along with the wonderful Valerie Trebeljahr and members of The Notwist and Tied & Tickled Trio, there’s a special appearance by none other than Yellow Magic Orchestra‘s Yukihiro Takahashi!

The song is called “Remember,” which Pitchfork called a “propulsive pop number.”

More than half a decade has elapsed since the release of ‘Faking The Books’, Lali Puna’s third (and hitherto most recent) long-player, but the band’s impact on the climate of electronic rock music remains palpable. Along with sister-group The Notwist, this Munich-based quartet has helped map out the musical landscape for modern, experimentally minded pop music. Now, with ‘Our Inventions’, the group’s first album of new material to be released in over five years, Lali Puna continues to push the frontiers of their medium. The album will be released on April 1 via Morr Music, and features a collaboration with ‘Yellow Magic Orchestra’s Yukihiro Takahashi on the song, “Out There.” The version appearing here is an alternate rendering of the track that appeared on Takahashi’s Page By Page album in 2009.

Fronted by singer and keyboard player Valerie Trebeljahr, Lali Puna’s line-up is completed by drummer Christoph Brandner (also of Tied & Tickled Trio), keyboard player Christian Heiß and Markus Acher (The Notwist). Over a decade of recording together this band have continued to grow in strength, confidence and studio expertise, cueing up a triumphant return to full operational capability on Our Inventions. In an age when the very notion of an album seems like an outmoded concept, Lali Puna are a band that both demand and amply reward the investment of their audience over a full-length narrative. ‘Our Inventions’ is a defiantly complete listening experience – one that exudes craftsmanship and captures the band at the peak of their powers as songwriters.
