The Luyas by Vincent Moon

April 9th, 2010

Words By Vincent Moon:

The Luyas have been my favourite band for the past year and a half. Listening to their music has always been an intense adventure, a little trip over the ocean, over an ocean, wherever I was. The balance between Jessie’s voice and their constant subtle experiments on pop formats was already obsessing me, but I will never forget this little film we did in Montreal, over an afternoon in october 2009. Never before such a musical genius was so obvious, so easy to follow, so exciting to film. The simple way Jessie Stein is always challenging her audience when playing is a little miracle of sincerity and dedication.

Tinariwen is one of my favorite bands, a mixture of Touareg poetry and song to the radical chaabi protest music of Moroccan groups like Nass El Ghiwane and Jil Jilala, and the Algerian pop rai to western rock and pop artists like Elvis Presley, Led Zeppelin, Carlos Santana, Jimmy Hendrix and Bob Marley. They sound to me like The talking heads Remain in light masterpiece album with desert Algerian rai. This is another Vincent Moon masterpiece that I have found on his site

December 4th, 2009

This is an incredible coincidence for me, how everything collides at the end. During the last few days I have been working on establishing and upgrading the’ Lolive’ section of Lofiles, and today I felt extremely guilty ( a common daily feeling for a son of a Polish mother) about neglecting the posting tasks for my site. So I went and dug into the PR mails I have received lately, to see if I could find interesting materials for Lofiles and came upon this mail talking about the works of Vincent Moon. For most of you who don’t know about this guy, I`ll start with the fact that he is my inspiration for the ‘Lolive’ section to begin with. Three years ago, Vincent moon had started ‘The take away shows’ for ‘La Blogotheque’, a series of outdoor/wild documentaries consists in improvised video sessions with musicians, set in unexpected locations and broadcast freely on the web. In his 3 years of ‘Take away’ action, he had managed to shoot over a hundred clips with bands like REM, Arcade Fire, Sufjan Stevens, Beirut, Grizzly and many more.
Now, the mail I got is talking about a prize Vincent Moon won for one of the side projects he is responsible for – a documentary he made of Kazuki Tomokawa, a troubadour, a rare folk artist from Japan, a 59 year old character out of a Yakuza movie. As Vincent is saying there is only one Tomokawa Kazuki, a past actor for Oshima or Miike, a passionate bike race gambler, Alcoholic, a skilled painter, a troubled father….. and a bonus Take away show with this guy…check it out (by the way, you could see a photo of one of my favorite Take away shows above, with The tallest man on earth, filmed at The music inn in New York, a spontanious location)
